The Use of Auricular Acupuncture in Substance Abuse Treatment Excerpt :

It is assumed that with treatment, many of these health and social costs may be decreased; however there is a high rate of relapse even after treatment. In addition, many of the empirically validated and current substance abuse treatments are associated with negative side effects. As a result, many individuals have sought out holistic and alternative substance abuse treatments. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA)'s 5-point auricular acupuncture protocol is considered to be the standard acupuncture treatment for drug and alcohol addiction (Blacker, 2008). Therefore the aim of this literature review is to examine the available research on the NADA protocol in order to determine its efficacy and effectiveness in treating substance abuse disorders. This review focused on the NADA's effect on withdrawal symptoms, retention in substance abuse treatment, relapse prevention, and its efficacy when used to treat different classes of substances. Articles were collected by utilizing the Carlos Albizu University Library Online Databases. Databases used included EBSCO, Academic Search Premier, PsyciNFO, PsycARTICLES, SociNDEX, CINAHL with Full Text, Business Source Complete, Academic Search Complete, Psychology and Behavioral Science, and eBook Collection (EBSCOhost). Additionally, articles were obtained by contacting the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) via email and by reviewing the Online Resources link on the NADA's website (http://www.acudetox.com.The criteria for inclusion in the review were the following: (a) publication in English, (b) only articles that specifically included information related to The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) auricular acupuncture protocol, and peer reviewed articles. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review and the results indicated that the efficacy of the NADA auricular acupuncture protocol in the treatment of substance abuse is inconclusive at

Chinese Auricular Acupuncture Excerpt :

In classical Chinese medicine, the ear is considered an extraordinarily powerful nexus of energy through which the entire body can be treated. Unlike numerous texts that apply Western approaches to Eastern medicine, Chinese Auricular Acupuncture explains ear acupuncture within the framework of traditional Oriental energetics consistent with the use of the medicine. Written by an esteemed practitioner and teacher of auricular acupuncture, this modern, user-friendly guide provides students and practitioners with a concise manual on ear acupuncture. High-quality photos illustrate common ear pathology and include instruction on diagnosis. The text features Chinese clinical energetics of ear acupoints interfaced with the most common diagnostic paradigms. It also contains a detailed discussion of how to construct prescriptions tailored to the patient rather than the disease process. This unique book simplifies the art of auricular acupuncture by relying solely on the traditional Chinese ear map rather than a set of complex charts and systems. This approach explains the practical utilization of auricular therapy in a manner that is memorable, clinically useful, and based on the underpinnings of an education in traditional Chinese medicine.

Complementary Therapies (CT) refers to the practices, products, or health systems that are outside the realm of conventional medicine, used to treat disease or to promote health and well-being. Defining CT is difficult, because the field is very broad and constantly changing. The title of this book includes the words body, mind, and soul. The body and the mind (and their reciprocal relations) have been extensively studied scientifically. What about the soul? The book brings some points about this new ground in CT. We hope you find in the present work the sincere desire to collaborate with the dissemination of knowledge. May this book be useful and pleasant to you.

Each is identified with an English name and the international standard nomenclature for point reference. The distribution patterns and classification, and standard names, locations, and indications for roughly 87 ear points are provided. The theoretical basis and methods of ear diagnosis, including inspection, palpation, and electrical detection are described. Diagnostic indicators for 100 commonly seen internal and external diseases, OB/GYN diseases, dermal diseases, and EENT disorders are delineated. A variety of therapeutic methods are covered: seed acupressure, filiform needling, intradermal needle implantation, electroacupuncture, plum blossom needling, bloodletting, medicine injection, ear moxibustion, ear massage, medicated plasters, and magnet therapy. There is an extensive section dealing with treatments for more than 132 common disorders. Substance and Non substance Addiction Excerpt :

This book focuses on the similarities and differences between substance and non-substance addictions. It discusses in detail the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of substance and non-substance addictions, and addresses selected prospects that will shape future studies on addiction. Addiction is a global problem that costs millions of lives tremendous damage year after year. There are mainly two types of addition: substance addiction (e.g., nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, heroin, stimulants, etc.) and non-substance addiction (e.g., gambling, computer gaming, Internet, etc.). Based on existing evidence, both types of addiction produce negative impacts on individuals’ physical, mental, social and financial well-being, and share certain common mechanisms, which involve a dysfunction of the neural reward system and specific gene transcription factors. However, there are also key differences between these two types of addiction. Covering these aspects systematically, the book will provide researchers and graduate students alike a better understanding of drug and behavioral addictions.

Ear Acupuncture Excerpt :

A novelty to the international market both in concept and realization, this pocket atlas allows the reader to both effectively learn and quickly reference ear acupuncture points. Clear, simple images accompany concise and "to-the-point" texts creating an educational tool for the localization of ear acupuncture points. The resourcefulness of the book is increased by the inclusion of the projection of the body meridians onto the auricle according to Bahr. Besides, "prescriptions" of point combinations according to some indications are included. The reader will profit from the extensive international teaching experience of Beate Strittmatter. Through her former teacher, Frank Bahr, who cooperated directly with Dr.Paul Nogier, she stands in the direct tradition of the founder of Western auriculotherapy.
