“ I applaud [this] book for providing a much needed overview of the entire “behavioral intervention pipeline.” It fills a unique niche in its coverage of key theoretical and methodological aspects as well as its case examples and professional development considerations, which makes the content accessible and practical for a broad audience.” -Marcia Ory, PhD From the Foreword This unique text provides comprehensive coverage of one of the most neglected—yet vitally important--areas of public health research: developing, evaluating, and implementing novel behavioral interventions in service and practice settings. Written for Masters- and Doctoral-level courses as well as novice and expert researchers in this area, the book examines the most critical issues surrounding this form of research in order to maximize the ability of intervention researchers to successfully implement current and future evidence-based protocols in practice settings. Expert contributors embrace key challenges —the complexities of health care delivery, disease management and prevention, rising costs, and changing population demographics—in shaping the push toward advancing more efficient and effective behavioral interventions and methodologies. Tackling numerous topics that have been neglected in traditional randomized trial handbooks, methodology texts, and books on dissemination and implementation science, the book addresses: ways to develop and advance an intervention, emerging hybrid trial designs - theories and new models for integrating behavioral interventions with implementation science - - recruitment and retention strategies for inclusion of diverse samples - research designs for different stages of intervention development - treatment fidelity models and measures - novel measurement and analytic strategies - cost analyses - selection of control groups - use of mixed methodology - ethics and informed consent - technology-based intervention approaches – professional consid

The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research in the Asian Context Excerpt :

Qualitative research is growing in Asia and globally. In an Asian context, this requires an awareness of a completely different set of norms, practices, and expectations than those covered by books from a western perspective. This handbook truly celebrates these differences. Spanning the full research process, from philosophy and ethics to design and methods and through data collection, management, analysis, and dissemination, it focuses specifically on the practicalities needed to conduct effective and culturally responsive research in the Asian context. This handbook extends beyond researchers actually in Asia and also speaks to researchers working with Asian participants, researching in Asian immigrant neighbourhoods, and studying the larger global topics like socioeconomic challenges, climate change, or technological advancement. This is the first book to focus specifically on qualitative research in the Asian context and includes diverse contributors from Asia such as the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, India, Oman, China, South Korea, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, and from other continents such as North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. Section 1: Foundations of Qualitative Research in Asia Section 2: Qualitative Research Designs Section 3: Best Practices in Dealing with Qualitative Research Data Section 4: Other Qualitative Research Topics

Handbook of Psychosocial Interventions with Older Adults Excerpt :

In the past decade, evidence based practice (EBP) has emerged as one of the most important movements to improve the effectiveness of clinical care. As the number of older adults continues to grow, it is essential that practitioners have knowledge of effective strategies to improve both the medical and the psychosocial aspects of older persons' lives. The purpose of this work is to present systematic reviews of research-based psychosocial interventions for older adults and their caregivers. The interventions presented focus on a variety of critical issues facing older adults today including medical illnesses (cardiac disease, diabetes, arthritis/pain, cancer, and HIV/AIDS), mental health/cognitive disorders (depression/anxiety, dementia, substance abuse), and social functioning (developmental disabilities, end-of-life, dementia caregivers, grandparent caregivers). For each of these areas the prevalence of the problem, the demographics of those affected, and the nature and consequences of the problem are discussed. The empirical literature is then reviewed. A treatment summary highlights the type and nature of research supporting the interventions reviewed and is followed by a conclusion section that summarizes the status of intervention research for the specified issue. A Treatment Resource Appendix for each area is included. These appendices highlight manuals, books, articles and web resources that detail the treatment approaches and methodologies discussed. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work.

New Directions in Behavioral Intervention Development for Pediatric Obesity An Issue of Pediatric Clinics of North America E Book Excerpt :

Almost one out of every three US children is overweight or obese, with minority youth at highest risk. There are limited efficacious pediatric obesity interventions available for clinicians, and successful weight loss trials for minority youth are rare. Even fewer interventions have been shown to significantly improve clinical health outcomes such as adiposity, blood pressure, and cholesterol level, and maintenance of behavior change over the long-term remains a challenge Translation I research in which "bench" findings are applied to the "bedside" is uncommon in the behavioral arena. Thus, advances in our understanding of fundamental human processes such as motivation, emotion, cognition, self-regulation, decision-making, stress, and social networks are not being optimally applied to our most pressing behavioral health problems. This issue of Pediatric Clinics will focus on promising behavioral treatments "in the pipeline" that have been translated from basic behavioral science and are the process of refinement and proof of concept testing.

Behavioral Healthcare and Technology Excerpt :

In recent years, there has been an explosion of research focused on using technology in health care, including web- and mobile- health assessment and intervention tools, as well as smartphone sensors and smart environments for monitoring and promoting health behavior. This work has shown that technology-based therapeutic tools offer considerable promise for monitoring and responding to individuals' health behavior in real-time. They may also function as important "clinician-extenders" or stand-alone tools, may be cost-effective and may offer countless opportunities for tailoring behavioral monitoring and intervention delivery in a manner that is optimally responsive to each individual's profile and health behavior trajectory over time. Additionally, informational and communication technologies may be used in the context of decision support tools to help individuals better understand and access treatment. Technology may enable entirely new models of health care both within and outside of formal systems of care and thus offers the opportunity to revolutionize health care delivery. This edited book will define the state of scientific research related to the development, experimental evaluation, and effective dissemination of technology-based therapeutic tools targeting behavioral health. Behavioral Health Care and Technology will provide an overview of current evidence-based approaches to leverage technology to promote behavioral health, including management of substance use, mental health, diet/exercise, medication adherence, as well as chronic disease self-management. Additionally, the book will define the state of implementation research examining models for deploying technology-based behavioral health care systems and integrating them into various care settings to increase the quality and reach of evidence-based behavioral health care while reducing costs.
