Mayan People Within and Beyond Boundaries Excerpt :

Mayan People Within and Beyond Boundaries explores the Maya of Yucatan, the Maya of academic institutions and the Maya of the tourist industry. It examines the interplay between the local and the external, academic categories of the Maya, and seeks to transcend the paradoxical and incongruent relationship between the social spaces that breathe life into the categories. The notion of "shared social experience" is introduced to embody a focus on reflexivity that goes beyond the subjective position of the author and helps demystify the coexisting subjectivities characteristic of ethnographic fieldwork. It provides a basis for overcoming the exclusive focus on "author," " text," and "discourse" in contemporary postmodernist ethnography, while still conveying important ethnographic information.

Within Against and Beyond Liberalism Excerpt :

This book provides a generous immanent description of liberalism, but also works against and looks beyond it. It engages liberalism and its variants in IPE at a moment in time when liberalism and liberal internationalism are experiencing something of a crisis of confidence. Though we are deeply critical of liberalism, especially the variant that dominates in IPE, we picture liberalism as variegated and rife with doubt and tensions that potentially open it to traditions of thinking beyond itself. We also show how these tensions and doubts often prompt attempts at closure in the form of defensive maneuvers, like Eurocentric conceptions of development that justify Western dominance and the condemnation of scholarship that exposes relations of domination and subordination as violating the precepts of unit-level positive science. But recognizing these maneuvers as defensive reactions may help us grasp the moments of greater openness within liberalism that connect to traditions that think against and beyond its central tenets.

Silence within and beyond Pedagogical Settings Excerpt :

This book explores the significance of silence within and beyond pedagogical contexts. Silence is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon for everyday life: since schools mirror society, it is also significant in education. While silence can be experienced in a multitude of different ways, the author reflects on whether silence itself can bear a message: is there an aspect of dialogue in silence, or is it a language all of its own? This book examines a variety of silences essential for education, examining such topics as silence and aspects of power, silent students, and the relationship between listening and silence. Drawing on a range of empirical data, the author elucidates the significance of silence in pedagogical contexts.

Within Language Beyond Theories Volume III Excerpt :

This is the third volume in the series Within Language, Beyond Theories, which focuses on current linguistic research that surpasses the limits of contemporary theoretical frameworks in order to gain new insights into the structure of the language system and to offer more explanatorily adequate accounts of linguistic phenomena taken from a number of the world’s languages. This book offers a collection of fourteen chapters organized into three parts and serves as a vehicle for the survey of new voices in discourse analysis, pragmatics and corpus-based studies. Part I addresses a panorama of topics related to different discourse types, such as talk show discourse, multimodal discourse, and everyday spoken discourse, as well as written academic discourse. Part II covers a range of highly controversial issues in pragmatics, including the status of ad-hoc concepts, linguistically encoded meaning, explicit content, and the lexicographic treatment of modality. Part III encompasses chapters which offer an overview of some of the recent phenomena covered in the area of corpus-based research, including the semantic functions of the temporal meanings of selected prepositions; the diffusion of gerundive complements; the institutionalization and de-institutionalization of neologisms; contextual factors in the placement of the adverb “well”; the behaviour of the verb “bake” in copular constructions; the syntactic flexibility of English idioms and their thematic composition; tendencies in the formation of nouns in tabloids; and the application of cluster analysis to the categorization of linguistic data. Drawing on recent advances in discourse analysis, pragmatics and corpus-based studies, the majority of the issues discussed here are approached and investigated from a dual perspective. While on the theoretical side, an array of different theoretical models is surveyed, in the analytical parts, the practical applications of the models examined are tested against data fro

Creative graduate pathways within and beyond the creative industries Excerpt :

Examining pathways from creative education to work, and preparation for these pathways within higher education programs, in the light of long standing labour debates, this book explores the creative launch experiences, destinations, and contributions of graduates emerging into an enormously diverse and heterogeneous creative workforce. Coming from university degree programs that tend to focus on the development of specialist creative disciplinary skills, graduates emerge into the diverse workforce with fairly narrow career identities. With contributions ranging from quantitative analyses of large longitudinal data sets to in-depth qualitative cases, the book aims to provide a range of studies that speak to the complexity found in creative careers. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Education and Work.

Beyond the Mountains Overcoming the Challenges Within Excerpt :

Every event in life has a context. We are encouraged to take decisions based on the context and the options which present themselves. Right from my school days, I had taken keen interest in trekking and mountaineering. At various stages of my life, I availed of the opportunity to go for treks, attended rock climbing program at Nuh organised by Delhi Mountaineering Association and also enrolled for the Basic Mountaineering Course at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute at Darjeeling in 1983. I couldn't finish the course because of sickness. My love for mountains started with the school trips at my alma mater Modern School where I got exposed to trekking in and around Nainital and Dalhousie (Khajjiar, Chamba). Passion for the mountains has been a constant theme of my personal life. So, when the opportunity of the Expedition 2 to Margan Pass (13000 ft) presented itself, I had no hesitation in joining along with 10 other students from 1st and 2nd years of the MBA program at Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi. This was a milestone for me. I subsequently led the Expedition 3 to Sach Pass (15000 ft). The learnings from these real-life events were life changing. The lessons learnt were to shape my corporate career which was to follow after the MBA Program. During the expeditions, you go through real life experiences which help you to test and improve your leadership skills. The expeditions were like a leadership laboratory on teamwork, risk taking, project strategizing, resourcing, planning, inter-personal conflict resolution and crisis management. Needless to say, at a personal level, it was a humbling experience. I have shared these experiences with various generations of students at FMS in the form of a case study, hoping that someday they would benefit from these lessons. I could have written this book earlier in my life but I would have perhaps missed out on the leadership experiences and formal leadership concepts which I have learnt along the way.
