Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering Book Description :

Biomedical engineering involves the application of the principles and techniques of engineering to the enhancement of medical science as applied to humans or animals. It involves an interdisciplinary approach which combines the materials, mechanics, design, modelling and problem-solving skills employed in engineering with medical and biological sciences so as to improve the health, lifestyle and quality-of-life of individuals. Biomedical engineering is a relatively new field, and involves a whole spectrum of disciplines covering: bioinformatics, medical imaging, image processing, physiological signal processing, biomechanics, biomaterials and bioengineering, systems analysis, 3-D modelling, etc. Combining these disciplines, systematically and synergistically yields total benefits which are much greater than the sum of the individual components. Prime examples of the successful application of biomedical engineering include the development and manufacture of biocompatible prostheses, medical devices, diagnostic devices and imaging equipment and pharmaceutical drugs. The purpose of this book is to present the latest research and development carried out in the areas of biomedical engineering, biomaterials and nanomaterials science and to highlight the applications of such systems. Particular emphasis is given to the convergence of nano-scale effects, as related to the delivery of enhanced biofunctionality.

Biomaterials Science and Engineering Book Description :

This book is written for those who would like to advance their knowledge beyond an introductory level of biomaterials or materials science and engineering. This requires one to understand more fully the science of materials, which is, of course, the foundation of biomaterials. The subject matter of this book may be divided into three parts: (1) fundamental structure-property relationships of man-made materials (Chapters 2-5) and natural biological materials, including biocompatibility (Chapters 6 and 7); (2) metallic, ceramic, and polymeric implant materials (Chapters 8-10); and (3) actual prostheses (Chapters 11 and 12). This manuscript was initially organized at Clemson University as classnotes for an introductory graduate course on biomaterials. Since then it has been revised and corrected many times based on experience with graduate students at Clemson and at Tulane University, where I taught for two years, 1981-1983, before joining the University of Iowa. I would like to thank the many people who helped me to finish this book; my son Y oon Ho, who typed all of the manuscript into the Apple Pie word processor; my former graduate students, M. Ackley Loony, W. Barb, D. N. Bingham, D. R. Clarke, J. P. Davies, M. F. DeMane, B. J. Kelly, K. W. Markgraf, N. N. Salman, W. J. Whatley, and S. o. Young; and my colleagues, Drs. W. Cooke, D. D. • Genre: Technology & Engineering
  • Pages : 379
  • ISBN 10 : 9783540713982

Titanium Book Description :

The authors were motivated to prepare this book by the absence of any recent comprehensive book on titanium. The intent of this book is to provide a modern compendium that addresses both the phyical metallurgy as well as the applications of titanium. Until now the only book on this subject is that by Zwicker which was written in German and published almost 30 years ago. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the subject including some historical aspects of titanium. Chapter 2 is a s- mary of the Fundamental Aspects of Titanium, Chapter 3 is a summary of the Technological Aspects of Titanium and Chapters 4 through 9 address the specifics of the various classes of titanium ranging from CP Titanium to Titanium Matrix Composites. Finally, Chapter 10 covers “special” properties and applications of titanium. Our intent has been to address the subject conceptually rather than provide quantities of data of the sort that would be found in a Handbook. It is our intent that this book is useful for materials scientists and engineers interested in using titanium and for students either as a sourcebook or as a textbook. We have - tempted to include a representative set of references which provide additional detail for readers interested in specific aspects of titanium. Because of the re- tively recent growth of the technological importance of titanium, there is a vo- minous literature on titanium. While our references span this literature it has proven impossible to mention every contribution.
