This book discusses both the theory and practical applications of self-correcting data, commonly known as error-correcting codes. The applications included demonstrate the importance of these codes in a wide range of everyday technologies, from smartphones to secure communications and transactions. Written in a readily understandable style, the book presents the authors’ twenty-five years of research organized into five parts: Part I is concerned with the theoretical performance attainable by using error correcting codes to achieve communications efficiency in digital communications systems. Part II explores the construction of error-correcting codes and explains the different families of codes and how they are designed. Techniques are described for producing the very best codes. Part III addresses the analysis of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, primarily to calculate their stopping sets and low-weight codeword spectrum which determines the performance of th ese codes. Part IV deals with decoders designed to realize optimum performance. Part V describes applications which include combined error correction and detection, public key cryptography using Goppa codes, correcting errors in passwords and watermarking. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in error-correcting codes and their applications, ranging from non-experts to professionals at the forefront of research in their field. Coding and Decoding Seismic Data: The Concept of Multishooting, Volume One, Second Edition, offers a thorough investigation of modern techniques for collecting, simulating, and processing multishooting data. Currently, the acquisition of seismic surveys is performed as a sequential operation in which shots are computed separately, one after the other. The cost of performing various shots simultaneously is almost identical to that of one shot; thus, the benefits of using the multishooting approach for computing seismic surveys are enormous. By using this approach, the longstanding problem of simulating a three-dimensional seismic survey can be reduced to a matter of weeks. Providing both theoretical and practical explanations of the multishooting approach, including case histories, this book is an essential resource for exploration geophysicists and practicing seismologists. Investigates how to collect, stimulate, and process multishooting data Addresses the improvements in seismic characterization and resolution that can be expected from multishooting data Provides information for the oil and gas exploration and production business that will influence day-to-day surveying techniques Covers robust decoding methods of undetermined mixtures, nonlinear decoding, the use of constraints in decoding processes, and nonlinear imaging of undecoded data Includes access to a companion site with answers to questions posed in the book

Constrained Coding and Soft Iterative Decoding Excerpt :

Constrained Coding and Soft Iterative Decoding is the first work to combine the issues of constrained coding and soft iterative decoding (e.g., turbo and LDPC codes) from a unified point of view. Since constrained coding is widely used in magnetic and optical storage, it is necessary to use some special techniques (modified concatenation scheme or bit insertion) in order to apply soft iterative decoding. Recent breakthroughs in the design and decoding of error-control codes (ECCs) show significant potential for improving the performance of many communications systems. ECCs such as turbo codes and low-density parity check (LDPC) codes can be represented by graphs and decoded by passing probabilistic (a.k.a. `soft') messages along the edges of the graph. This message-passing algorithm yields powerful decoders whose performance can approach the theoretical limits on capacity. This exposition uses `normal graphs,' introduced by Forney, which extend in a natural manner to block diagram representations of the system and provide a simple unified framework for the decoding of ECCs, constrained codes, and channels with memory. Soft iterative decoding is illustrated by the application of turbo codes and LDPC codes to magnetic recording channels. For magnetic and optical storage, an issue arises in the use of constrained coding, which places restrictions on the sequences that can be transmitted through the channel; the use of constrained coding in combination with soft ECC decoders is addressed by the modified concatenation scheme also known as `reverse concatenation.' Moreover, a soft constraint decoder yields additional coding gain from the redundancy in the constraint, which may be of practical interest in the case of optical storage. In addition, this monograph presents several other research results (including the design of sliding-block lossless compression codes, and the decoding of array codes as LDPC codes). Constrained Coding and Soft Iterative Decoding will prove us

Coding and Decoding of Calcium Signals in Plants Excerpt :

Plants cannot move away from their environments. As a result, all plants that have survived to date have evolved sophisticated signaling mechanisms that allow them to perceive, respond, and adapt to constantly changing environmental conditions. Among the many cellular processes that respond to environmental changes, elevation of calcium levels is by far the most universal messenger that matches primary signals to cellular responses. Yet it remains unclear how calcium, a simple cation, translates so many different signals into distinct responses - how is the “specificity” of signal-response coupling encoded within the calcium changes? This book will attempt to answer this question by describing the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the coding and decoding of calcium signals in plant cells.

Principles of Digital Communication Excerpt :

The renowned communications theorist Robert Gallager brings his lucid writing style to the study of the fundamental system aspects of digital communication for a one-semester course for graduate students. With the clarity and insight that have characterized his teaching and earlier textbooks, he develops a simple framework and then combines this with careful proofs to help the reader understand modern systems and simplified models in an intuitive yet precise way. A strong narrative and links between theory and practice reinforce this concise, practical presentation. The book begins with data compression for arbitrary sources. Gallager then describes how to modulate the resulting binary data for transmission over wires, cables, optical fibers, and wireless channels. Analysis and intuitive interpretations are developed for channel noise models, followed by coverage of the principles of detection, coding, and decoding. The various concepts covered are brought together in a description of wireless communication, using CDMA as a case study.

Channel Coding in Communication Networks Excerpt :

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the subject ofchannel coding. It starts with a description of information theory, focusing on the quantitative measurement of information andintroducing two fundamental theorems on source and channel coding. The basics of channel coding in two chapters, block codes andconvolutional codes, are then discussed, and for these the authorsintroduce weighted input and output decoding algorithms andrecursive systematic convolutional codes, which are used in therest of the book. Trellis coded modulations, which have their primary applicationsin high spectral efficiency transmissions, are then covered, beforethe discussion moves on to an advanced coding technique calledturbocoding. These codes, invented in the 1990s by C. Berrou and A.Glavieux, show exceptional performance. The differences betweenconvolutional turbocodes and block turbocodes are outlined, and foreach family, the authors present the coding and decodingtechniques, together with their performances. The book concludeswith a chapter on the implementation of turbocodes in circuits. As such, anyone involved in the areas of channel coding anderror correcting coding will find this book to be of invaluableassistance.

Joint Source Channel Decoding Excerpt :

Treats joint source and channel decoding in an integrated way Gives a clear description of the problems in the field together with the mathematical tools for their solution Contains many detailed examples useful for practical applications of the theory to video broadcasting over mobile and wireless networks Traditionally, cross-layer and joint source-channel coding were seen as incompatible with classically structured networks but recent advances in theory changed this situation. Joint source-channel decoding is now seen as a viable alternative to separate decoding of source and channel codes, if the protocol layers are taken into account. A joint source/protocol/channel approach is thus addressed in this book: all levels of the protocol stack are considered, showing how the information in each layer influences the others. This book provides the tools to show how cross-layer and joint source-channel coding and decoding are now compatible with present-day mobile and wireless networks, with a particular application to the key area of video transmission to mobiles. Typical applications are broadcasting, or point-to-point delivery of multimedia contents, which are very timely in the context of the current development of mobile services such as audio (MPEG4 AAC) or video (H263, H264) transmission using recent wireless transmission standards (DVH-H, DVB-SH, WiMAX, LTE). This cross-disciplinary book is ideal for graduate students, researchers, and more generally professionals working either in signal processing for communications or in networking applications, interested in reliable multimedia transmission. This book is also of interest to people involved in cross-layer optimization of mobile networks. Its content may provide them with other points of view on their optimization problem, enlarging the set of tools which they could use. Modern Coding Theory Excerpt :

Having trouble deciding which coding scheme to employ, how to design a new scheme, or how to improve an existing system? This summary of the state-of-the-art in iterative coding makes this decision more straightforward. With emphasis on the underlying theory, techniques to analyse and design practical iterative coding systems are presented. Using Gallager's original ensemble of LDPC codes, the basic concepts are extended for several general codes, including the practically important class of turbo codes. The simplicity of the binary erasure channel is exploited to develop analytical techniques and intuition, which are then applied to general channel models. A chapter on factor graphs helps to unify the important topics of information theory, coding and communication theory. Covering the most recent advances, this text is ideal for graduate students in electrical engineering and computer science, and practitioners.
