Magnesium Alloys Book Description :

Magnesium alloys with their unique physical and chemical properties are important candidates for many modern engineering applications. Their density, being the lowest of all structural metals, makes them the primary choice in global attempts aimed at reducing the weight of transportation vehicles. However, magnesium also creates challenges at certain stages of raw alloy melting, fabrication of net-shape components and their service. The first one is caused by very high affinity of magnesium to oxygen, which requires protective atmospheres increasing manufacturing cost and heavily contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. The second challenge relates to very high corrosivity of liquid magnesium towards materials it contacts. This imposes restrictions on the selection of materials used to contain, transfer or process molten magnesium during manufacturing operations. A mixture of unique benefits and serious challenges of magnesium alloys in solid and liquid states described here makes the book very useful for a broad audience of scientists and engineers from academia and industry.

Tribocorrosion of Passive Metals and Coatings Book Description :

Tribocorrosion causes the degradation or alteration of materials through the combined action of corrosion and wear. It limits the performance and life-time of installations, machines and devices with moving parts, and controls certain manufacturing processes such as chemical–mechanical polishing. The effects of tribocorrosion are most pronounced on passive metals which owe their corrosion resistance to a thin protecting oxide film. Most corrosion-resistant engineering alloys belong to this category. This book provides an introduction to the developing field of tribocorrosion and an overview of the latest research. Part one reviews basic notions of corrosion and tribology, before presenting the most recent results on the growth and structure of passive oxide films. Tribocorrosion mechanisms under fretting, sliding and erosion conditions, respectively, are then discussed. Part two focuses on methods for measuring and preventing tribocorrosion. It includes chapters on electrochemical techniques, the design of tribocorrosion test equipment, data evaluation and the optimisation of materials’ properties for tribocorrosion systems. Part three presents a selection of tribocorrosion problems in engineering and medicine. Three chapters address the tribocorrosion of medical implants including test methods and clinical implications. Other chapters examine tribocorrosion issues in nuclear power plants, marine environments, automotive cooling circuits, elevated-temperature metal working and chemical–mechanical polishing. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors Tribocorrosion of passive metals and coatings is an invaluable reference tool for engineers and researchers in industry and academia confronted with tribocorrosion problems. Comprehensively reviews current research on the tribocorrosion of passive metals and coatings, with particular reference to the design of tribocorrosion test equipment, data evaluation and the optimisation of m

Corrosion Fatigue of Metals in Marine Environments Book Description :

This book was prepared to document and review the major factors involved in corrosion fatigue of metals in marine environments. This includes both crack initiation and crack growth. Background information was obtained by searching technical literature through eight different sources--(1) Chemical Abstracts, (2) Metals Abstracts, (3) Metals and ceramics Information Center (MCIC), (4) Engineering Index, (5) Copper Data Center, (6) National Technical Information Service, (7) Defense Technical Information Service, and (8) Proceedings of Offshore Technology Conferences. Unpublished and proprietary papers and reports were excluded unless permission was obtained to release the results contained therein. Thus, most of the information was from documents published in the open literature. For convenient use and reference, discussions on corrosion-fatigue behavior are divided into separate chapters dealing with (1) carbon and alloy steels, (2) stainless steels, (3) nickel-base alloys, (4) copper-base alloys, (5) aluminum alloys, and (6) titanium alloys. Representative plots and tabulations of important data and factors influencing them are presented, but exhaustive plots and tabulations of all available data, such as might be found in handbooks, are not included because these are beyond the scope of this review. A general background for corrosion fatigue is presented in Chapter 2, which briefly discusses experimental procedures, general phenomena and mechanisms, variables affecting corrosion of metals in marine environments, and use of fatigue data in design.

Corrosion Engineering Book Description :

Corrosion costs billions of dollars to each and every single economy in the world. Corrosion is a chemical process, and it is crucial to understand the dynamics from a chemical perspective before proceeding with analyses, designs and solutions from an engineering aspect. The opposite is also true in the sense that scientists should take into consideration the contemporary aspects of the issue as it relates to the daily life before proceeding with specifically designed theoretical solutions. Corrosion Engineering is advised to both theoreticians and practitioners of corrosion alike. Corrosion engineering is a joint discipline associated primarily with major engineering sciences such as chemical engineering, civil engineering, petroleum engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering among others and major fundamental sciences such as sub-disciplines of physical, inorganic and analytical chemistry as well as physics and biology, such as electrochemistry, surface chemistry, surface physics, solution chemistry, solid state chemistry and solid state physics, microbiology, and others. Corrosion Engineering is a must-have reference book for the engineer in the field that covers the corrosion process with its contemporary aspects with respect to both of its scientific and engineering aspects. It is also a valuable textbook that could be used in an engineering or scientific course on corrosion at the university level.
