An Endless Summer Excerpt :

Sean looked out over the lake, squinting against the sunlight. He turned to me, his expression sobering as his eyes flicked over my face in a silent study. “Come on Amy, I saved you once, I’ll save you again.” I met his stare unflinchingly. “I don’t need saving.” A wicked grin formed slowly. “Don’t you?” After a rebellious summer night that almost claimed her life, Amy Henderson – the Onslow publican’s only daughter – is sent away to suffer a fate far worse than any other punishment: Boarding School. Three years on, a now nineteen-year-old Amy returns to Onslow for the summer. What once was a cauldron of activity with live bands, hot meals and cold beers, the Onslow Hotel now lies dark, deserted and depressing. All fond childhood memories of loitering on the hotel stairs and eavesdropping on customers’ colourful conversations are in the distant past. How had her dad let it come to this? With the new threat of putting the Onslow up for sale, Amy reluctantly turns to a local tradesman for help: Sean Murphy, the very same Onslow boy who saved her life all those years ago. With his help and that of some old friends, the task is clear: spend the summer building the hotel back up to its former glory or lose it for good. In an endless summer, Amy soon realises that sometimes in order to save your future, you have to face your past, even if it’s in the form of a smug, gorgeous Onslow boy. In celebration of the approaching 21st century, the author joined the 46-foot ketch Hornblower II in a 'round-the-world rally. The British-sponsored Millennium Odyssey started in 1998 with a flame-lighting ceremony in the Old City of Jerusalem and ended on Easter Day 2000 at the Vatican. There, rally organizer Jimmy Cornell presented Pope John Paul II a lantern with the flame carried around the world from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The author recounts his east-west voyage along the "coconut milk run" through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific, Indian, and South Atlantic oceans, then back to the Caribbean and Florida. Along the way, he reflects on the marine ecosystem, globalization, and the history of exploration starting with Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, Zheng He, Magellan to Cook.

The Promise of Endless Summer Excerpt :

Whenever an august figure departs the world of cricket, The Daily Telegraph records a decorous tribute. There will certainly be an obituary – in days of yore penned by the doyen of cricket writers, E.W. Swanton, in recent times unafraid to be a lot more whimsical, waspish, and even extremely funny. There will often be an appreciation by one of the paper’s stable of cricket correspondents, such as Derek Pringle, Michael Henderson or Scyld Berry, most likely drawing on their memories of having played against the subject or watched his deeds. And sometimes a hero’s demise will prompt a heartfelt tribute from someone whose only qualification as an elegist is their own eloquence, as John Major displays on Denis Compton and Michael Parkinson on Keith Miller. And those cricket lives deemed worthy of memorialising need not be illustrious Test careers, though all the great names from Bradman to Bedser, Cowdrey to D’Oliviera, are here. They can also be quixotic county mavericks like ‘Bomber’ Wells, self-effacing professionals like Tom Cartwright and Derek Shackleton, or charismatic one-offs like Colin Milburn or the Nawab of Pataudi. They may not even be cricketers, but rather much-loved commentators and broadcasters like Brian Johnston and Christopher Martin-Jenkins, players-turned-umpires like David Shepherd and Bill Alley, or, like the Bishop of Liverpool who previously opened for Sussex and England, have made their name equally elsewhere. Their achievements are often hymned by their peers – Mark Nicholas on his Hampshire team-mate Malcolm Marshall, Tony Lewis on John Arlott, Colin Croft on Alf Valentine, and Simon Hughes on facing the fearsome Sylvester Clarke. Here, then, are more than eighty greats of the game – Australians and South Africans alongside Somerset yeomen and Yorkshire’s finest. For any cricket lover, this little book is an endlessly browsable testament to the sheer richness and variety of the cricketing life.

Endless Summer Excerpt :

There are a great many names in this book because over the course of some thirty-five or so years in the entertainment business, Lloyd worked with, met with, or just talked to a lot of people including celebrities of various ilk. A few became his friends; many were merely business or golfing acquaintances. The time he spent with the Beach Boys surely made them his friends or at least one would hope. Lloyd always made it a point to differentiate between people he designated as friends and those who were merely acquaintances based on, to a very minor degree, who picked up the check or whether or not he was close enough to be invited to their homes. Or even how quickly or even whether they returned phone calls. There are many of each. A lot of what is included in this book has not previously been in print, either because it related to things he shared personally with the people involved or because it was not known to the general public. While this isn't quite a "tell all" book, it is definitely a "tell some" book. Anyway, herein lies an opportunity to live what Jack Lloyd lived and then re-lived as he wrote it. Enjoy the ride.

Surfers loathed them, teenagers flocked to them, critics dismissed them, producers banked on them—surf and beach movies.
