Recently, there has been an explosion in the growth of wirelessly connected devices. The number of autonomous devices is expected to reach trillions in total. Autonomous devices range from home thermostats to industrial sensors. To route communication from these devices to the end-user, a base station is required. Collectively, the base station and autonomous devices form a wireless sensor network. However, the proliferation of wireless sensor networks has led to an unprecedented energy management crisis on two fronts. First is energy generation, for which establishing methods of self-powering are critically important since battery replacement is infeasible for the trillions of autonomous devices. The second is efficient power use by the base station. Efficient power delivery to the RF power amplifier (PA) is imperative, which dissipates a majority of base station power. Motivated by these core challenges, this dissertation presents techniques for energy management and harvesting to achieve self-powered operation and envelope tracking techniques for optimized power delivery to the base station RF PA. First, a reconfigurable energy management unit (EMU) is introduced. The EMU achieves unification of an energy source, energy storage, voltage regulation, and energy recycling for dynamic voltage scaling by implementing multi-directional energy flow control. A reconfigurable switching converter architecture is implemented to accommodate flexible voltage conversion and multi-directional energy flow. Furthermore, supercapacitors are employed to enhance operation lifetime. Second, a piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is developed to achieve self-powered operation. However, significant challenges remain unresolved with regard to harvesting from time-varying vibrations. To overcome these challenges, an adaptive impedance matching technique is proposed. To retain reasonable efficiency at low power levels, the controller is designed with nanopower circuits. Last, a switch
