I show that British electricity tariffs create substantial welfare loss, equivalent to between six and eighteen percent of domestic consumption value. Losses are greater than unpriced distributional and environmental counter effects. Expected technological change will increase this welfare loss. Deployment of distributed energy resources (e.g. solar) benefits adoptees at the expense of non-adoptees as tariffs are recalibrated to recover fixed costs. Reform on Coasian principles avoids these welfare losses and re-distributional effects. In providing these estimates, I combine household-level micro-data with information on utility cost and tariff structure to simulate the welfare effects of tariff reform and technological change.

Energy and environmental security are major problems facing our global economy. Fossil fuels, particularly crude oil, are confined to a few regions of the world and the continuity of supply is governed by dynamic political, economic and ecological factors. These factors conspire to force volatile, often high fuel prices while, at the same time, environmental policy is - manding a reduction in greenhouse gases and toxic emissions. Yet incr- sed growth and demand for welfare by developed and developing countries are placing higher pressure on energy resources. In particular, a large fraction of “new consumers” in developing countries already reached a purchasing power high enough as to be able to access to commodity and energy markets worldwide, thus boosting energy consumption and competition for all kinds of resources. Such a trend, although in principle may represent a progress towards diffuse welfare and wealth as well as much needed equity, is at present contributing to a rush for the appropriation of available resources which are directly and indirectly linked to energy and may contribute to planetary instability if it is not adequately understood and managed. A coherent energy strategy is required, addressing both energy supply and demand, security of access, development problems, equity, market dy- mics, by also taking into account the whole energy lifecycle including fuel production, transmission and distribution, energy conversion, and the impact on energy equipment manufacturers and the end-users of energy systems.

This paper presents an overview of the renewable energies which are being championed as a potentially significant new source of jobs and growth, especially in OECD countries, and are a means of addressing environmental and energy security concerns. In most countries, governments have invested large amounts of public funds to support the development of RE and are thus requiring energy providers to sell significant quantities of it to the public. In fact, accelerating the deployment of renewable energy will fuel economic growth, create new employment opportunities, enhance human welfare, and contribute towards a climate-safe future. There is unmistakably a strong link between the availability of energy resources and economic development (Salah Abo-Sedra et al. Journal of Energy 2014). Apergis and Payne in their work “Energy Consumption and Economic Growth”, as well as Wolde-Rufael (Energy Economics, 2009), argue that the rise in energy demand in African countries is closely linked to income. In other words, energy consumption interacts with economics. This review paper explores this interaction and with help of recent empirical research, shows there are economic benefits and achievements in the renewable energy sector for especially those which are provided by an international institution such as IRENA and OEERE. After having shown the relationship between RE and economics, the economic benefits and the achievements in the renewable energy sector are mentioned.
