Fire Fighting Pumping Systems At Industrial Facilities Excerpt :

Written from the perspective of industrial users, this is the only book that describes how to install an effective firewater pumping system in a pragmatic and budget-conscious way rather than with purely the regulatory framework in mind. Based on the wide-ranging industrial experience of the author, this book is also the only one that deals with the particular risks and requirements of off-shore facilities. This book takes the reader beyond the prescriptive requirements of the fire code (NFPA, UL) and considers how to make the best choice of design for the budget available as well as how to ensure the other components of the pumping system and supporting services are optimized. The only alternative to guides written by regulatory enforcement bodies, this book is uniquely practical and objective – demonstrating how and why the standards need to be met Covers a wide range of industries, including those with exceptional requirements such as off-shore petroleum facilities and chemical plants Written by someone who has been responsible for the safety of large numbers of workers and billions of dollars worth of equipment, for those in similarly responsible positions

Applied Operational Excellence for the Oil Gas and Process Industries Excerpt :

Applied Operational Excellence for the Oil, Gas, and Process Industries offers a straightforward practical guide for oil and gas companies to understand the comparisons and contrasts between various types of safety management processes, including the standardized structure and ongoing extended benefits that operational excellence can bring to an oil and gas company. The goal of achieving operational excellence is to reduce costs, improve productivity, and enhance efficiency—in other words, operational excellence contributes to the bottom line. Following along with pre-built success in the process industries, many companies in the oil and gas industry appear to use a subset form of operational excellence, yet many are unsure or unaware of all the safety system components that will truly benefit the company holistically, and current literature is only applicable to the process and manufacturing industries. Packed with clear objectives and tools, structure guidelines specific to oil and gas, and guidance for how to imbed your existing safety program under the operational excellence umbrella known as "One-Step Merger," this book will help you establish an overall safety culture vision and challenge your organization to achieve higher levels of safety management and overall company value. Explores how to solidify a foundational operational excellence program applicable for your oil and gas company Clarifies the differences and benefits among various programs under operational excellence (OE), such as SHE (safety, health, and environment), PSM (process safety management), and SMS (safety management system) Explains how to audit and consistently assess how oil and gas OE systems are planned, implemented, and managed, with explanations on cost and time impacts as well as administrative protocols Includes a glossary, acronym appendix, and additional references for further reading

Industrial Firefighting for Municipal Firefighters Excerpt :

Although municipal firefighters respond on a daily basis to industrial fires or emergencies, even the largest fire departments often focus most of their training and attention to structural or wildland firefighting. It is increasingly probable that municipal firefighters will be called to an industrial incident due to a fire or terrorist event. The authors have written this book to specifically prepare the municipal firefighter for responses to a wide range of industrial fires, where the situation will be monumentally different. ""Industrial Firefighting for Municipal Firefighters"" is an ideal resource for municipal firefighters who may respond to an industrial incident, personnel at industrial facilities that have in-house, first-response capability, and larger industrial fire departments.

The Industrial Revolution Lost in Antiquity Found in the Renaissance Excerpt :

Ever increasing research evidence continues to mount. Having started my research on the connection of the Hydraulis to the roots of the more recent Industrial Revolution at the University of St. Gallen in 1989 over 30 years ago, I continue to identify additional support for it. We do not know whether the beginnings of an Industrial Revolution in Hellenistic Greece would have continued if not cut off by the Roman Empire's conquests. Neither do we know whether the more recent (latent) Industrial Revolution could have risen up again in the 17th-century without Vitruvius or Hero of Alexander's preserved writings. The point of this book is to emphasize with new findings that had the Romans not stopped the growth of science and technology in the Hellenistic Period that it would have likely continued to develop into a full-fledged Industrial Revolution. Secondly, the more recent Industrial Revolution borrowed heavily on the technology and science of the Hellenistic Period. In the true sense of the "Renaissance" 17th-century industrial progress largely picked up the written remnants of Antiquity to be able to continue on after a centuries long caesura.

Industrial Fire Protection Handbook Second Edition Excerpt :

Fundamentally, fire prevention and control refer to systems and practices that increase a facility's ability to avoid fires, limit the development and spread of fires, and rapidly and effectively control fires. Changing safety codes and regulations along with recent technological advances have rendered the first edition of this popular handbook somewhat out of date and left fire safety professionals without a current, reliable reference devoted to their needs. Comprehensive, uniquely focused, and completely up to date, the Industrial Fire Protection Handbook, Second Edition provides a practical guide for improving fire prevention and protection within a work environment. The author has made extensive revisions, significantly expanded his discussions in key areas, and added numerous examples and illustrations to provide a better-than-ever overview of all essential areas of fire protection, including loss control programs, fire behavior, life safety, hazard control, and emergency planning.
