Breakdown and Breakthrough Excerpt :

Breakdown and Breakthrough examines the essential role of regression in the patient's recovery from mental illness. In light of this Nathan Field reassesses the role of the therapist tracing psychotherapy back to its earliest spiritual roots and comparing modern analytic methods with ancient practices of healing and exorcism. The author uses vivid examples from his psychotherapeutic practice to show how, with the apparent breakdown of the therapeutic method itself, patients can break through to a new level of functioning. The book goes on to consider how psychotherapy has been affected by fundamental developments in twentieth century science, such as the move from old, classical assumptions of linear causation to non-linear complexity from reductionism to a holistic systems approach and from mental mechanisms to acknowledging the mysteries of unconscious interaction. Taking up the radical vision originally proposed by Carl Jung and later fostered by eminent psychotherapists such as Winnicott and Bion, the author shows how psychotherapy can be reframed to admit the existence of a psychological fourth dimension. Nathan Field reappraises ideas of health and pathology, psychoanalysis and healing, sex and spirituality in light of a dramatic shift in the way we understand ourselves. How this shift alters the shape of psychotherapy in the twenty-first century is the challenge the practitioners, teachers and trainees must all address.

In 2018, Tom had two nervous breakdowns. He literally was at the end of himself. The reason was he just never took care of himself. It was at a point that the pressure came on strong. Yet he felt that time would take care of it. He was so wrong. He had neglected his soul. David, in a couple of Psalms, said, "Why are you downcast oh my soul put your hope in God?" David understood he needed to allow his soul to know he was paying attention to its feelings. You must know when your soul is whole, everything else just falls into place. We must love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength; and we need to love our neighbors, as well as ourselves. We love God first. We love others second, and as often neglected, we need to love ourselves. But if any of these are broken, all of it is broken. This breakdown, Tom had, lasted a number of months, and he really didn't know how to fix it. Again, he felt time would heal it. Tom finally talked to his local pastor here, and he suggested a few things to do. They are mentioned in this book. We all need to watch over our souls. Whether you are going through it or not, you need to know that there are many resources to help. One of the biggest things that can help you is to have a couple of people around you that are able to walk with you through it, that you can be accountable to, and that can pray with you through things. You cannot feel ashamed that you're going through them. That being said, let this journey help you. Allow it to give hope as you move forward.

What happens to you, your team, even your entire organization when the business environment becomes more volatile and challenging? Have you noticed how some leaders continue to achieve breakthrough results under even the most difficult of circumstances while others’ relationships break down, creating even more turmoil? Which of these leaders do you choose to be? In "From Breakdown to Breakthrough", leading change consultant, Michael Papanek, draws on his experience, insights, and research with top executives to shine a spotlight on how anyone---even those whose business relationships have suffered in the heat of change in the past---can establish the resilient relationships required for a long-term track record of business success. From his early days working during the General Motors---Electronic Data Systems merger in Detroit, to launching his own consultancy in San Francisco just as the U.S. economy reached its nadir, author Michael Papanek learned first-hand why it is vital to ensure all business relationships are Strong, Flexible, and Fair. Weaving this knowledge into a model applied successfully by his clients within leading organizations including Apple, Google, and Yahoo!, Papanek now offers this proven approach to any business professional wondering how to rise above the vicious cycle of relationship breakdown that many of us find ourselves in---especially during times of incessant change. The history of every company is always about key relationships that either led to long-term success, or breakdown. Some leaders seem naturally adept at riding what Papanek calls “The Heat Curve,” emerging from volatile times with their relationships not just in tact, but enhanced. From Breakdown to Breakthrough shows how you can achieve that not just for yourself, but for everyone you work with.

The Rabbi and the CEO Excerpt :

Ancient Talmudic wisdom and the modern pragmatism of today's boardroom meet up to find that they have much to discuss. In 'The Rabbi and the CEO', corporate insider and Columbia business professor Thomas Zweifel, Ph. D. engages in a dialogue with Rabbinic scholar Aaron L. Raskin of the congregation B'nai Avraham of Brooklyn, and from this emerges an enlightening synthesis of old vs. new and culture vs. science.Much as the discussion of Japanese culture and entrepreneurial success evoked study, debate and a wealth of literature back in the 1980s, this book will examine those underlying principles by which Jewish and non-Jewish business leaders can lead their companies while remaining true to their values. This is a fun read and a lively discussion as Dr. Zweifel and Rabbi Raskin take us on a tour of Mosaic Law to draw some unexpected conclusions. This book will help readers of all faiths learn that there is not necessarily a great distinction between running an exceptional business and leading a good life.

Future Money Excerpt :

Future Money explains in plain language and convincing detail how our money system is propelling us toward the self-destruction of our species – and what we should do about it. Our present money system frustrates the well-meaning efforts of active citizens, NGOs and governments to deal with our present ills and problems – including worldwide poverty, environmental destruction, social injustice, economic inefficiency and political unrest and violence within and between nations. Failure to reform the world’s money system urgently and radically – that is, from its roots up – could bring disaster for human civilisation before the end of this century. Future Money shows clearly how our money system operates and how it could be reformed so that it acts for the benefit of people and society rather than the opposite, and describes the obstacles that currently prevent that reform. The world’s financial experts and leaders in politics, government and business, and most mainstream academic and media commentators, have demonstrated that they are not yet able or willing to diagnose and treat the profound and pervasive problems that are directly caused by the money system. Future Money speaks explicitly to active, independent-minded citizens, including young people, with the hope that it will help them to understand why people committed to careers in almost every important walk of life today find it difficult to recognise the problem and grasp the nettle. It shows why we have to take the initiative now, and urgently, to get the issue on to mainstream agendas worldwide.

Migrating Minds Excerpt :

Migrating Minds contributes to the prominent interdisciplinary domain of Cosmopolitan Studies with twenty innovative essays by humanities scholars from all over the world that re-examine theories and practices of cosmopolitanism from a variety of perspectives. The volume satisfies the need for a stronger involvement of Comparative and World Literatures and Cultures, Translation, and Education Theories in this crucial debate, and also proposes an experimental way to explore in depth the necessity of a cosmopolitan method as well as the riches of cosmopolitan representations. The essays follow a logical progression from the situated philosophical and political foundations of the debate to interdisciplinary propositions for a pedagogy of cosmopolitanism through studies of modern and contemporary cosmopolitan cultural practices in literature and the arts and the concurrent analysis of prototypes of cosmopolitan identities. This trajectory allows readers to appreciate new historical, theoretical, aesthetic, and practical implications of cosmopolitanism that pertain to multiple genres and media, under different modes of production and reception. In the de-territorialized landscape of Migrating Minds, mental and sentimental mobility, rather than the legacy of place, is the key to an efficient, humanist response to deadening globalization.

Soul Reset Excerpt :

Everything was going fine . . . until it wasn't. For Reverend Junius B. Dotson it took an actual breakdown during a funeral for him to realize he needed a reset. As he recalls his own journey through grief, depression, burnout, and emotional breakdown, Dotson is passionate about calling for a Soul Reset for pastors, church leaders, and all disciples of Jesus Christ. This is a 7-week churchwide study for everyone who moves at breakneck speed through their daily lives, often relying only on their own strength to bring God's kingdom on earth. Jesus shows us a different way, an easier, unforced rhythm of what kingdom work looks like. It's a balance of work, rest, play, worship, exercise, and eating well--spiritual practices that keep our souls hydrated and healthy as we do the work of the church in the world. Soul Reset: Breakdown, Breakthrough, and the Journey to Wholeness includes a book; a DVD; downloadable video segments; age-level discussion guides for children, youth, and adults; sermon starters; and more. Soul Reset is a call for the church and all of Jesus' disciples to reset and reorder their lives around spiritual practices, to learn to walk through our difficult seasons with our souls connected to the source of Living Water so that we don't burn out or break down. And if we do burn out or break down, we learn to lift one another up and point one another back to Jesus.
