The Handbook of Clinical Neurology series volumes provide comprehensive summaries of recent research on the brain and nervous system as they relate to clinical neurology. Cardiac disorders and diseases may often co-occur with, or cause, subsequent neurological disorders. Heart and Neurologic Disease identifies the top cardiac diseases and disorders most likely to have neurological disorders, how they will present, and how they are best treated. It identifies the mechanisms of action explaining why the conditions co-occur, and what clinicians should look for symptom wise, and how risk may be assessed. Coverage includes genetic cardiac disorders, cardiac trauma, surgery, infection, disease, and arrhythmia. Identifies the top cardiac diseases and disorders most likely to have neurological complications Specifies how the neurological complication will present and advance and how it should be treated Discusses the mechanism of action—why the two conditions co-occur Includes genetic conditions, trauma, surgery, infection, disease, arrythmias, and more Covers prevention and risk assessment

Psychopathological and Neurological Dysfunctions Following Open Heart Surgery Excerpt :

The Surgeon as a Humanist Medicine is the most humane of the sciences and the most scientific of the humanities. Cardiac surgery today provides a most natural confluence for the high technology of medicine and the humanistic values traditional in the practice of medicine. The cardiac surgeon must, of necessity, be knowledgeable in physiology and cardio logy, and must also possess consummate surgical technical skill. The attainment of these skills over long years of training leads many of these surgeons to believe or per ceive this long struggle as an apotheosis of their position in life, rather than as an education in bringing the latest scientific advances to the care of patients. The problem lies not only with the cardiac surgeon; it is also contributed to by the patients' perception of heart surgery, heart disease, and the mystery of the science and physiology involved. The patient with heart disease expecting surgery may, for the first time, be facing the finiteness of his existence. The low risk of cardiac surgery to day not withstanding, the coronary surgery patients, most likely a type A personality, is faced with a perceived threat to his invulnerability, his self-image, his family, his independence, his control of situations, and his very existence.

With 30+ international contributors, this book aims to provide readers with a unique global perspective on the role these factors plays in sleep architecture and its regulation by circadian biology and neurology. Sleep disorders have become an increasing problem plaguing more than 70 million Americans according to the American Sleep Association. There is a clear association between sleep disorder and a wide range of other human disorders –performance deficiencies, psychiatric illnesses, heart disease, obesity and more – but in spite of this there is not yet a convenient overview on the market detailing the impact of obesity, age, diabetes and diet on sleep duration and attendant health outcomes. Describes the impact of diet, caffeine and physical activity on sleep Reviews the neurology and metabolism of sleep Identifies what foods impact sleep and how Discusses the clinical use of nutraceuticals to improve sleep

Autonomic Nervous System Excerpt :

Heart rate variability (HRV) provides indirect insight into autonomic nervous system tone, and has a well-established role as a marker of cardiovascular risk. Recent decades brought an increasing interest in HRV assessment as a diagnostic tool in detection of autonomic impairment, and prediction of prognosis in several neurological disorders. Both bedside analysis of simple markers of HRV, as well as more sophisticated HRV analyses including time, frequency domain and nonlinear analysis have been proven to detect early autonomic involvement in several neurological disorders. Furthermore, altered HRV parameters were shown to be related with cardiovascular risk, including sudden cardiac risk, in patients with neurological diseases. This chapter aims to review clinical and prognostic application of HRV analysis in diabetes, stroke, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophies, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.
