Information Flow and Knowledge Sharing Book Description :

Except from the Foreword The stated aim of the book series "Capturing Intelligence" is to publish books on research from all disciplines dealing with and affecting the issue of understanding and reproducing intelligence artificial systems. Of course, much of the work done in the past decades in this area has been of a highly technical nature, varying from hardware design for robots, software design for intelligent agents, and formal logic for reasoning. It is therefore very refreshing to see Information Flow and Knowledge Sharing. This is a courageous book indeed. It is not afraid to tackle the Big Issues: notions such as information, knowledge, information system, information flow, collaborative problem solving, and ontological reasoning. All of these notions are crucial to our understanding of intelligence and our building of intelligent artificial systems, but all too often, these Big Issues are hidden behind the curtains while the technical topics take center stage. AI has a rich history of philosophical books that have chosen a non-standard structure and narrative. It is nice to see that the authors have succeeded into combining a non-standard approach to deep questions with a non-standard format, resulting in a highly interesting volume. Frank van Harmelen, Series Editor Excerpt from the Introduction Our interest is to promote, through a better and deeper understanding of the notions of information and knowledge, a better and deeper critical understanding of information technology as situated in the full range of human activities, assuming as a principle that this range of activities cannot be properly appreciated when it is reduced to the simplified means-end schema proposed by Technology. We invite the reader to build his/her own points of view about these notions, considering our propositions as a starting point for a critical analysis and discussion of these points. With that, we believe we are contributing to a better understanding of the impact of techno

Technology and Knowledge Flow Book Description :

This book outlines how network technology can support, foster and enhance the Knowledge Management, Sharing and Development (KMSD) processes in professional environments through the activation of both formal and informal knowledge flows. Understanding how ICT can be made available to such flows in the knowledge society is a factor that cannot be disregarded and is confirmed by the increasing interest of companies in new forms of software-mediated social interaction. The latter factor is in relation both to the possibility of accelerating internal communication and problem solving processes, and/or in relation to dynamics of endogenous knowledge growth of human resources. The book will focus specifically on knowledge flow (KF) processes occurring within networked communities of professionals (NCP) and the associated virtual community environments (VCE) that foster horizontal dynamics in the management, sharing and development of fresh knowledge. Along this line a further key issue will concern the analysis and evaluation techniques of the impact of Network Technology use on both community KF and NCP performance. The proposal of a taxonomy of Network Technology uses to support formal and informal knowledge flows Analyses how Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technology is deeply modifying the dynamics connected to KF and KM Discusses dynamics underlying horizontal KF sharing processes within NCP

Overcoming Knowledge Sharing Barriers through Communities of Practice Book Description :

Managing knowledge for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of processes and for accelerating innovations is widely recognized as a major source of sustained competitive advantage. The growing importance of knowledge sharing has fostered the development of a growing body of research in different disciplinary areas and in different sectors. The analyses of the barriers that obstruct knowledge flows are paramount for improving organizational performance. The researcher has analyzed the literature on this argument and he has found that knowledge sharing barriers can be grouped into three main macro-dimensions: socio-psychological, technological and organizational. The author has analyzed the predicting power of the barriers that make knowledge sharing ineffective and the subsequent relationship with new product development performance in a big automotive R & D supplier. Raffaele Filieri adopts both qualitative and quantitative methods in an innovative way. The regression analysis and the analysis of a firms’ proprietary process were used to measure the strength of knowledge sharing barriers on knowledge sharing efficacy and new product development performance. The social network analysis was used to map the intra-firm knowledge sharing network and to identify and to solve organizational problems. Through social network analysis, the researcher has obtained a better understanding of the informal work in the organization, showing how effectively engineers and scientists work, and how they structured their knowledge sharing networks. The recognition of a hidden network of collaboration has several implications; one of these is the creation of a community of practice for solving the problems previously identified.
