Building Information Modeling Excerpt :

BIM for Structural Engineering and Architecture Building Information Modeling: Framework for Structural Design outlines one of the most promising new developments in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Building information modeling (BIM) is an information management and analysis technology that is changing the role of computation in the architectural and engineering industries. The innovative process constructs a database assembling all of the objects needed to build a specific structure. Instead of using a computer to produce a series of drawings that together describe the building, BIM creates a single illustration representing the building as a whole. This book highlights the BIM technology and explains how it is redefining the structural analysis and design of building structures. BIM as a Framework Enabler This book introduces a new framework—the structure and architecture synergy framework (SAS framework)—that helps develop and enhance the understanding of the fundamental principles of architectural analysis using BIM tools. Based upon three main components: the structural melody, structural poetry, and structural analysis, along with the BIM tools as the frame enabler, this new framework allows users to explore structural design as an art while also factoring in the principles of engineering. The framework stresses the influence structure can play in form generation and in defining spatial order and composition. By highlighting the interplay between architecture and structure, the book emphasizes the conceptual behaviors of structural systems and their aesthetic implications and enables readers to thoroughly understand the art and science of whole structural system concepts. Presents the use of BIM technology as part of a design process or framework that can lead to a more comprehensive, intelligent, and integrated building design Places special emphasis on the application of BIM technology for exploring the intimate relationship between st

Laminar Composites Excerpt :

This text provides students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to identify, model, and solve structural analysis problems. The material is illustrated throughout with numerous diagrammatic examples, as well as example problems similar in nature to those found in lower level strength of materials texts. The difficulty of these and the homework problems varies from simple to complex. A solutions manual is provided for lecturers who adopt the book for classroom teaching. This book mirrors the teaching method used in strength of materials courses taught in the first years of an undergraduate degree and relate this higher level treatment back to that. The author is involved in the development of the latest teaching methods (with McGraw Hill), and his style is straightforward. There is web-mounted software to back up the book's content, plus a solutions manual for instructors. There are approximately 20-30 homework problems per chapter, making a substantial body of material for teaching use. Polyolefin Compounds and Materials Excerpt :

This book describes industrial applications of polyolefins from the researchers' perspective. Polyolefins constitute today arguably the most important class of polymers and polymeric materials for widespread industrial applications. This book summarizes the present state of the art. Starting from fundamental aspects, such as the polymerization techniques to synthesize polyolefins, the book introduces the topic. Basic knowledge about polyolefin composites and blends is explained, before applications aspects in different industry sectors are discussed. The spectrum comprises a wide range of applications and industry sectors, such as the packaging and food industry, the textile industry, automotive and buildings, and even biomedical applications. Topics, which are addressed in the various chapters, comprise synthesis and processing of the materials; their classification; mechanical, physical and technical requirements and properties; their characterization; and many more. In the end of the book, even the disposal, degradation and recycling of polyolefins are addressed, and light is shed on their commercial significance and economic value. In this way, the book follows the entire 'lifetime' of polyolefin compounds and materials: from their synthesis and processing, over applications, to the recycling and reuse of disposed or degraded polyolefin substrates.

Mechanics of Curved Composites Excerpt :

This book is the frrst to focus on mechanical aspects of fibrous and layered composite material with curved structure. By mechanical aspects we mean statics, vibration, stability loss, elastic and fracture problems. By curved structures we mean that the reinforcing layers or fibres are not straight: they have some initial curvature, bending or distortion. This curvature may occur as a result of design, or as a consequence of some technological process. During the last two decades, we and our students have investigated problems relating to curved composites intensively. These investigations have allowed us to study stresses and strains in regions of a composite which are small compared to the curvature wavelength. These new, accurate, techniques were developed in the framework of continuum theories for piecewise homogeneous bodies. We use the exact equations of elasticity or viscoelasticity for anisotropic bodies, and consider linear and non-linear problems in the framework of this continuum theory as well as in the framework of the piecewise homogeneous model. For the latter the method of solution of related problems is proposed. We have focussed our attention on self-balanced stresses which arise from the curvature, but have provided sufficient information for the study of other effects. We assume that the reader is familiar with the theory of elasticity for anisotropic bodies, with partial differential equations and integral transformations, and also with the Finite Element Method.
