Major Accidents to the Environment Book Description :

If our plant catches fire, when should it be allowed to burn down to prevent pollution? When does enforcement turn into prosecution, following an environmental accident? Will our environmental insurance cover the costs of remediation? This book provides a thorough and practical guide to the environmental aspects of compliance with the Seveso II Directive and COMAH regulations and surrounding issues. It guides readers through the technical, legal and insurance related complexities unique to the environmental aspects of Seveso II/COMAH. Individual chapters and sections written by relevant experts explain the implications of the Directive/Regulations and other laws that relate to major accident hazards. Valuable case studies underpin and illuminate the arguments presented. The comprehensive appendices contain a wealth of further case studies as well as focused supporting information on environmental design, assessment and management of major hazard installations, for safety, prevention and environmental professionals, risk assessors, insurers, managers and their legal advisors. Dr Ivan Vince is Director of ASK Consultants and co-founder of one of the first industrial risk consultancies in Eastern Europe. He has investigated several environmental accidents. Prevention of Major Accidents in the Oil Gas Industry Book Description :

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: B, Robert Gordon University Aberdeen (Energy Centre), course: Master of Science Oil & Gas Engineering, language: English, abstract: Despite sophisticated Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management Systems and highly developed safety cultures, major accidents in the Oil & Gas industry are reoccurring events. This type of low frequency high impact event puts at stake the health and safety of employees, the viability of the ecosystem, the integrity of the structure, the life and health of populations in neighboring communities and can also massively impact the economic situation of a region. Prevention of major accidents is therefore of utmost importance. Detailed case studies of nine historic major accidents revealed common features in the accidents, although they represent a wide range of individual accident scenarios. Identified common features and recurring patterns were degradation of safety measures, decrease in attention and awareness towards major accident hazards as well as an increase in complacency and resulting management failures. These findings served as the basis for a prevention model specific to major accident hazards in the Oil & Gas industry. The Management of Major Accidents Scenarios model (MOMAS) was designed with special attention to practical application, information availability over long time periods and avoiding degradation of safety systems, in a holistic system approach. The MOMAS model consists of elements fit for application and offers palpable and precise support in performing the individual assessment steps. This was tested by demonstrating the prevention potential of the MOMAS model on three of the case study incidents. The MOMAS model also integrated the approach of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), which is deemed to be more applicable to a major accident scenario setting than the current approach of As Low As Reasonably Pra

Risk Assessment and Risk Management Book Description :

Risk assessment is considered by many analysts to be an objective scientific tool. It is considered to be variously influenced by broader issues which in turn have important practical implications both for risk assessors and decision makers. Risk Assessment and Risk Management examines a range of practical applications of risk assessment methods and risk management procedures in the broad context of environmental science and technology. Written by acknowledged experts in the field, the articles cover a variety of areas, with reference to subjects as diverse as BSE, the use of risk assessment in government, using computer modelling as an aid to risk assessment in the case of accidental contamination of rivers and estuaries, quantitative cancer risk assessment related to carcinogens in the environment, landfilling of household wastes, environmental risk assessment and management of chemicals, and aquatic risk assessment and management of pesticides. This book provides a detailed and wide-ranging review of the many aspects of risk assessment and risk management which have excited so much debate and controversy in recent times. It will be essential reading for all those involved in the assessment and management of risk, particularly in the context of environmental science.

Evaluation of the Effects and Consequences of Major Accidents in Industrial Plants Book Description :

Evaluation of the Effects and Consequences of Major Accidents in Industrial Plants analyzes the different major accidents which can occur in process plants and during the transportation of hazardous materials. The main features of fires, explosions and toxic releases are discussed, and a set of mathematical models allowing the prediction of their effects and consequences are explained. With a practical approach, the models are applied to simple illustrative examples, as well as to more complex real cases. The use of these calculations in the frame of Quantitative Risk Analysis is also treated. Evaluation of the effects of major accidents in industrial installations covers the following topics: general introduction, source term, fire accidents, vapour cloud explosions, BLEVEs and vessel explosions, atmospheric dispersion of toxic or flammable clouds, vulnerability, and quantitative risk analysis. This book is a useful tool for engineering professionals, as well as an interesting reference for teaching at graduate and post-graduate levels. Both the essential aspects and the calculations related to the diverse accidents are discussed The prediction of effects and consequences is performed with a practical approach Recent contributions from literature have been included Subjects of increasing importance have been included: an extense analysis of BLEVEs, for example, or the atmospheric dispersion of pathogenic agents

Decision making Analysis and Optimization Modeling of Emergency Warnings for Major Accidents Book Description :

This book highlights cutting-edge research into emergency early warning management and decision-making for severe accidents. Using toxic gas leakages as examples, it puts forward new design methods for emergency early warning systems, as well as a systematic description of emergency early warning information communication mechanisms and characteristics of regional evacuation, based on a wide range of theories, including safety engineering, information engineering, communication, behaviorology and others. The book applies a range of methods, such as case analysis, questionnaire interviews, and multi-objective optimization modeling. Drawing on this basis, it subsequently proposes a multi-objective optimization modeling and algorithm for emergency path selection, together with an evacuation risk assessment method. Divided into six chapters prepared by an international team of researchers, the book addresses the design of early warning systems, communication and dissemination mechanisms of early warning information, characteristics of regional evacuation, multi-objective optimization of emergency paths, and evacuation risk assessment. The book offers an essential reference guide for engineering technicians and researchers in a wide range of fields, including emergency management, safety science and engineering, disaster relief engineering, and transportation optimization, as well as graduate students in related majors at colleges and universities.
