Over the past decade the use of Au in synthetic chemistry has increased exponentially. In addition, Au has become an important element used in biology, especially as surface templates. In the history of the PATAI Series there was, so far, no volume dedicated to gold alone. In 1999 we published a volume on The Chemistry of Gold and Silver Compounds. Since then a lot of new chemistry using gold has been developed and it is timely to focus a volume on methods and applications of organogold compounds. This volume fits into the series of “organometallic” functional groups, such as the volumes on organolithium, organomagnesium, organozinc, organomanganese, organocopper, metal enolates and organoiron [currently under development]. The Chemistry of Organogold Compounds focuses on three areas which dominated the developments in the past 15 years.
