European Union Law in Context Excerpt :

This textbook provides an explanatory and contextual view of EU law and its impact in a simple and easily accessible yet analytical manner. It illustrates the power struggles behind a given EU law act, to allow for full understanding of how it developed. This allows the student to understand EU law as a force in the increasingly globalized world, rather than as technical and doctrinal subject. The textbook begins by setting the scene of EU integration, how we got there and why it is important. Thereafter it explores the constitutional framework for understanding EU law in context and by discussing inter alia, division of competences, accountability, legitimacy, enforcement, human rights, participation rights and so on as well as the general principles of the EU and citizenship rights. Subsequently the textbook explores the essentials of the internal market as well as the principles of competition law. It also discusses free movement rights and links to the growing “Area of Freedom, Security and Justice”. Finally the textbook offers fresh insights on the external dimension of EU law and the role of the EU in the world today before concluding with an outlook on the future of EU law including the consequences of events such as Brexit.

Social Identities and Political Cultures in Italy Excerpt :

Emanating from a project begun in 1994 for the European studies program at the U. of Bath, this volume reports the results of a survey completed by 888 respondents from a small manufacturing town near Como and an industrial suburb of Milan, Italy (shown on maps.) Given Italy's diverse regional paths to modernity, the questionnaire addressed individualistic, family, and collective values. The results indicate that while family and social ties remain forte, those to political parties and trade unions have weakened. "Leghist" apparently refers to the Catholic-linked Lega Nord (Northern League) party. Includes the questionnaire and supporting tables and figures. Publication of the results of parallel French case studies is pending. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Immigration and Perceptions of National Political Systems in Europe Excerpt :

Immigration has become one of the most pressing political issues of the modern day, and public opinion polls indicate that it has been of public concern for some time. This book analyses the impact of immigration on perceptions of national political systems in Europe and contends that public concern about immigration is undermining trust in national political institutions and elites, as well as satisfaction with the way democracy is working. Immigration and Perceptions of National Political Systems in Europe contends that immigration presents more substantial challenges to some national identity constructions, and that while national identity in general can help to bolster support for national political systems, those who emphasize lengthy ties to the country are likely to be less positive about their national political systems, particularly when these allow for relatively easy immigrant incorporation. This book also includes an analysis of the impact of concern about immigration on the British political system, and shows that while concern about immigration appears to have been fairly high since the 1960s, it is only in since 1997 that such concern has come to translate into negative perceptions of the British political system.

European Identity Excerpt :

Despite its unequalled history of success, the European Union is still far from its citizens. In the aftermath of the failed referenda on the European constitutional treaty in France and the Netherlands in the early summer of 2005, the EU is facing a severe crisis of trust. Hence, the questions arise: how much pressure can the community tolerate in order to persist and what does hold it together in times of scarcity, conflict, danger, and threat? The contributions of this volume do not only provide a variety of conceptualizations of European identity in the broad field of social sciences such as sociology, political theory and international relations, but first and foremost intend to enrich the present research by offering new theoretical perspectives and recent empirical findings.

A Companion to Global Historical Thought Excerpt :

A COMPANION TO GLOBAL HISTORICAL THOUGHT A Companion to Global Historical Thought Edited by Prasenjit Duara, Viren Murthy, and Andrew Sartori A Companion to Global Historical Thought provides an overview of the development of historical thinking from the earliest times to the present, directly addressing issues of historiography in a globalized context. Questions concerning the global dissemination of historical writing and the relationship between historiography and other ways of representing the past have become important not only in the academic study of history, but also in public arenas in many countries. With contributions from leading international scholars, the book considers the problem of “the global” — in the multiplicity of traditions of narrating the past; in the global dissemination of modern historical writing; and of “the global” as a concept animating historical imaginations. It explores the different intellectual approaches that have shaped the discipline of history, and the challenges posed by modernity and globalization, while illustrating the shifts in thinking about time and the emergence of historical thought. Complementing A Companion to Western Historical Thought, this book places non-Western perspectives on historiography at the center of discussion, helping scholars and students alike make sense of the discipline at the start of the twenty-first century.

What Is a Nation Excerpt :

This volume analyses and compares different forms of nationalism across a range of European countries and regions during the long nineteenth century. It aims to put detailed studies of nationalist politics and thought, which have proliferated over the last ten years or so, into a wider European context. By means of such contextualization, together with new and systematic comparisons, What is a Nation? Europe 1789-1914 reassesses the arguments put forward in the principal works on nationalism as a whole, many of which pre-date the proliferation of case studies in the 1990s and which, as a consequence, make only inadequate reference to the national histories of European states. The study reconsiders whether the distinction between civic and ethnic identities and politics in Europe has been overstated and whether it needs to be replaced altogether by a new set of concepts or types. What is a Nation? explores the relationship between this and other typologies, relating them to complex processes of industrialization, increasing state intervention, secularization, democratization and urbanization. Debates about citizenship, political economy, liberal institutions, socialism, empire, changes in the states system, Darwinism, high and popular culture, Romanticism and Christianity all affected - and were affected by - discussion of nationhood and nationalist politics. The volume investigates the significance of such controversies and institutional changes for the history of modern nationalism, as it was defined in diverse European countries and regions during the long nineteenth century. By placing particular nineteenth-century nationalist movements and nation-building in a broader comparative context, prominent historians of particular European states give an original and authoritative reassessment, designed to appeal to students and academic readers alike, of one of the most contentious topics of the modern period.

Changing Indian Images of the European Union Excerpt :

This book explores the images and perceptions of the European Union (EU) in the eyes of one of the EU’s three strategic partners in Asia in the context of its own distinct policies and identity. It fills a major gap in existing studies on how Asians perceive the EU. The book examines the perception, representation and visibility of the EU in the Indian media, among the ‘elites’ and in public opinion. It explores whether the Union’s self-proclaimed representation as a global actor, a normative power and a leader in environmental negotiations conforms to how it is actually perceived in Third World countries. The book asks questions such as, How have Indian images of Europe/European Union been changing from the 1940s to the present? What new narratives have emerged or are emerging about the EU in India? What does the rise of China mean for EU-India relations? Is the image of the EU changing in India or do old representations still persist even though the Union is acquiring a new personality in the world politics? How does India perceive Poland?

Implementing European Union Education and Training Policy Excerpt :

The imminent enlargement of the European Union, as well as the EU's ambitious aim to become the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy represent significant challenges for research in the area of EU policies in education and training. In particular, investigations into the unresolved tensions between national traditions in education and the EU's striving for European standards and comparability of educational systems are required to ensure the successful development of future EU policies in these fields. Against this background, this study presents a collaborative effort by researchers from different European countries, all working on questions of European integration in the field of education and training. The various views mirror the perceptions and values that shape the discussion of such terms as harmonisation, recognition, convergence and subsidiarity in the educational sphere. The selection of papers provides insights into surprising similarities and important differences in the approaches of different Member States regarding the interpretation and implementation of EU education and training policies. This book summarises the results of a European research project conducted within the EU-funded network PRESTiGE (Problems of Educational Standardisation and Transition in a Global Environment). The network involves teams at six European universities: Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Lisbon, Dijon and Oxford.

The Victorian World Excerpt :

With an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses political history, the history of ideas, cultural history and art history, The Victorian World offers a sweeping survey of the world in the nineteenth century. This volume offers a fresh evaluation of Britain and its global presence in the years from the 1830s to the 1900s. It brings together scholars from history, literary studies, art history, historical geography, historical sociology, criminology, economics and the history of law, to explore more than 40 themes central to an understanding of the nature of Victorian society and culture, both in Britain and in the rest of the world. Organised around six core themes – the world order, economy and society, politics, knowledge and belief, and culture – The Victorian World offers thematic essays that consider the interplay of domestic and global dynamics in the formation of Victorian orthodoxies. A further section on 'Varieties of Victorianism' offers considerations of the production and reproduction of external versions of Victorian culture, in India, Africa, the United States, the settler colonies and Latin America. These thematic essays are supplemented by a substantial introductory essay, which offers a challenging alternative to traditional interpretations of the chronology and periodisation of the Victorian years. Lavishly illustrated, vivid and accessible, this volume is invaluable reading for all students and scholars of the nineteenth century.
