No Clouds Tomorrow Excerpt :

The inspirational book, No Clouds Tomorrow by Carol E. Crain, contains many of her songs, poems, and writings that will lift readers’ spirits and encourage those suffering from depression and hurtful memories. She also writes about reaching out to others by sending Envelope Hugs by mail. In her poem “It’s Hard to Celebrate Father’s Day,” she wrote, “It’s hard to celebrate Father’s Day / For a child who father is away / Unavailable and disconnected / Showing no love / To a child he’s rejected.” In “Return with me, Jesus,” she wrote, “Return with me, Jesus, / To days that are past. / Walk down roads where I’ve been. / Give me peace that will last.” The book’s title, No Clouds Tomorrow, came from these lines Carol wrote: “Don’t let your yesterdays ruin today. / Don’t let today / Put a cloud on tomorrow.” In her article about sending Envelope Hugs by mail, she writes, “I don’t type my notes and letters or use e-mail. I write my letters, my ‘Envelope Hugs,’ in longhand. I think this means more in a day of e-mail and junk mail. ... I suppose people hesitate to reach out to others because sometimes no words seem adequate. But human words are all we have, and I hope God can use things I share in envelopes to ease pain.” In No Clouds Tomorrow, she tells about some responses to her Envelope Hugs. Carol E. Crain passed on in 2019, but her inspiring songs, poems, and writings are timeless and still “speak” today, bringing comfort, healing, and inspiration to readers.

Movement caught her eye, and Rebecca looked up into the rearview mirror, the smile fading from her face. 'Easy, Vicky. Hold on!' Rebecca screamed just as she felt a jolt from behind. The black truck rammed them, and the icy road kept Rebecca from being able to turn the wheel. Now they were perched, parallel with the creek and the pavement, both left tires hanging dangerously over the edge of the embankment. They thought their troubles were over, but it was only the beginning. Thanks to Sheriff Tom Ackerman, the man they thought was responsible for terrorizing Rebecca Ackerman's father and brother over a plot of land is in jail. But before the investigation can even begin, the key witness is beaten up and left for dead. Apparently someone is still after the gold Rebecca's father found on his property in Six Mile Canyon. But who? Terror in Six Mile Canyon is Patricia Redican's second book in a two-part series set in Virginia City, Nevada, following Rebecca and her friend Vicky. Who is after them? And why is Vicky's new housemate, Amy, acting so suspicious? When Vicky and Rebecca go missing, it's up to Tom and Steven to find them before it's too late! Along the way, they will encounter ghostly miners and a one hundred-year-old ghost named Lorelei, who will also play a part in bringing the villains to justice. There's excitement waiting around every turn in Terror In Six Mile Canyon!

I Will Not Leave You Comfortless Excerpt :

This memoir of “a happy childhood in rural Missouri just before the digital revolution [is] a sweet record of a time and a place that was not Always On.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spanning one year of the author’s life—1984—I Will Not Leave You Comfortless is the intimate memoir of a young boy coming to consciousness in small-town Missouri. The year will bring ten-year-old Jeremy first loves, first losses, and a break from the innocence of boyhood that will never be fully repaired. For Jeremy, the seeming security of his life on the family farm is forever shaken by the life-altering events of that pivotal year. Throughout, he recalls the deeply sensual wonders of his rural Midwestern childhood—bicycle rides in September sunlight; the horizon vanishing behind tall grasses—while stories both heart-wrenching and humorous, tragic and triumphant, Jackson weaves past, present, and future into the rich Missouri landscape. “I could smell the mulberries crushed underfoot and the sweet steam of the cinnamon roll Grandma heated in the toaster oven just for Jeremy, hear the ever-increasing volume of an approaching late-spring storm . . . The year of Jeremy Jackson’s life on which he meditates in I Will Not Leave You Comfortless marked his transition from the perfect happiness of childhood to the much more complex reality of adulthood. It records, as well, the abiding comfort that remains—family, home and love.” —Wichita Eagle “Jackson writes about Missouri as the young Hemingway wrote about Michigan: with a clear eye; with hard-edged nostalgia; and (here’s the thing) with brilliance.” —Darin Strauss, author of Half a Life

“This book not only depicts dramatically, but at the same time demonstrates by what might be termed a mathematic method, the impossibility of any human creature’s being to others what he is to himself. “If you would like to have an idea of how it is that others see you, so as no longer to have to marvel at the judgments which others pass upon your personality, learn to reflect like the hero of this novel.” LUIGI PIRANDELLO.

The End of Meaning Excerpt :

The specter of the apocalypse has always been a semiotic fantasy: only at the end of all things will their true meaning be revealed. Our long romance with catastrophe is inseparable from the Western hermeneutical tradition: our search for an elusive truth, one that can only be uncovered through the interminable work of interpretation. Catastrophe terrifies and tantalizes to the extent it promises an end to this task. 9/11 is this book’s beginning, but not its end. Here, it seemed, was the apocalypse America had long been waiting for; until it became just another event. And, indeed, the real lesson of 9/11 may be that catastrophe is the purest form of the event. From the poetry of classical Greece to the popular culture of contemporary America, The End of Meaning seeks to demonstrate that catastrophe, precisely as the notion of the sui generis, has always been generic. This is not a book on the great catastrophes of the West; it offers no canon of catastrophe, no history of the catastrophic. The End of Meaning asks, instead, what if meaning itself is a catastrophe?

This fascinating memoir is a unique contribution to the history of film and cinema. At its center is the story of the making of the British film classic Western Approaches, the first story documentary in Technicolor, totally enacted by amateurs. Nominated for an Oscar, it has influenced and inspired film-making to this day. Acclaimed a masterpiece when it was released in December 1944, fifty years later Philip French wrote in The Observer: "It remains a milestone in our cinema and an exciting, vibrant cinematic experience."

Clouds above the Hill is the best-selling novel ever in Japan, and is now translated into English for the first time. An epic portrait of Japan in crisis, it combines graphic military history and highly readable fiction to depict an aspiring nation modernizing at breakneck speed. Best-selling author Shiba Ryōtarō devoted an entire decade of his life to this extraordinary blockbuster, which features Japan's emerging onto the world stage by the early years of the 20th century. Volume IV begins with the dramatic battle of Mukden where Akiyama Yoshifuru’s cavalry play a major part in the action against the Cossacks. Meanwhile, Admiral Tōgō’s fleet sail to the Tsushima strait to intercept the Baltic Fleet en route to Vladivostok. With the help of Akiyama Saneyuki’s strategies, the Baltic Fleet is totally destroyed and the Japanese fleet make a triumphant return to Yokohama. Anyone curious as to how the "tiny, rising nation of Japan" was able to fight so fiercely for its survival should look no further. Clouds above the Hill is an exciting, human portrait of a modernizing nation that goes to war and thereby stakes its very existence on a desperate bid for glory in East Asia.

Schwinn Black Phantom Excerpt :

In the spring of 1949 Warren Hearst can no longer play shortstop or ride his bike. The polio epidemic has claimed his body. Bundled in a blanket in the back of the family Chevy "Woody" station wagon, Warren rolls along Highway 30 toward Omaha and hospitalization. He will be a miserable "crip." He plans to run away. But the plan is dashed when he meets Whitey, that pushy little twerp across the street in the new, unfamiliar neighborhood. Out of the hospital, and sporting a leg brace and a crutch, Warren finds himself bumping along in Whitey's coaster wagon. Their destination is the old Woodard farm where a legendary, weathered tree house has been waiting to welcome yet another troubled child. The story begins when Warren and Whitey, life long friends and now in their sixties, are sitting face to face in a breakfast booth with sketchy plans drawn on a grease spotted placemat. It will be midnight when Whitey's pickup will bounce through the fields of the now deserted Woodard farm. The tree house will be dismantled and rebuilt in an old tree in Warren's back yard. Another special child will climb the ladder, because the planet Venus will be positioned just right in the glowing sunset of the western sky.
