Nonsmooth Approach to Optimization Problems with Equilibrium Constraints Excerpt :

This book presents an in-depth study and a solution technique for an important class of optimization problems. This class is characterized by special constraints: parameter-dependent convex programs, variational inequalities or complementarity problems. All these so-called equilibrium constraints are mostly treated in a convenient form of generalized equations. The book begins with a chapter on auxiliary results followed by a description of the main numerical tools: a bundle method of nonsmooth optimization and a nonsmooth variant of Newton's method. Following this, stability and sensitivity theory for generalized equations is presented, based on the concept of strong regularity. This enables one to apply the generalized differential calculus for Lipschitz maps to derive optimality conditions and to arrive at a solution method. A large part of the book focuses on applications coming from continuum mechanics and mathematical economy. A series of nonacademic problems is introduced and analyzed in detail. Each problem is accompanied with examples that show the efficiency of the solution method. This book is addressed to applied mathematicians and engineers working in continuum mechanics, operations research and economic modelling. Students interested in optimization will also find the book useful.

Large Scale Optimization Excerpt :

On February 15-17, 1993, a conference on Large Scale Optimization, hosted by the Center for Applied Optimization, was held at the University of Florida. The con ference was supported by the National Science Foundation, the U. S. Army Research Office, and the University of Florida, with endorsements from SIAM, MPS, ORSA and IMACS. Forty one invited speakers presented papers on mathematical program ming and optimal control topics with an emphasis on algorithm development, real world applications and numerical results. Participants from Canada, Japan, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Greece, and Denmark gave the meeting an important international component. At tendees also included representatives from IBM, American Airlines, US Air, United Parcel Serice, AT & T Bell Labs, Thinking Machines, Army High Performance Com puting Research Center, and Argonne National Laboratory. In addition, the NSF sponsored attendance of thirteen graduate students from universities in the United States and abroad. Accurate modeling of scientific problems often leads to the formulation of large scale optimization problems involving thousands of continuous and/or discrete vari ables. Large scale optimization has seen a dramatic increase in activities in the past decade. This has been a natural consequence of new algorithmic developments and of the increased power of computers. For example, decomposition ideas proposed by G. Dantzig and P. Wolfe in the 1960's, are now implement able in distributed process ing systems, and today many optimization codes have been implemented on parallel machines.

Numerics of Unilateral Contacts and Friction Excerpt :

Mechanics provides the link between mathematics and practical engineering app- cations. It is one of the oldest sciences, and many famous scientists have left and will leave their mark in this fascinating ?eld of research. Perhaps one of the most prominentscientists in mechanics was Sir Isaac Newton, who with his “laws of - tion” initiated the description of mechanical systems by differential equations. And still today, more than 300 years after Newton, this mathematical concept is more actual than ever. The rising computer power and the development of numerical solvers for diff- ential equations allowed engineersall over the world to predict the behavior of their physical systems fast and easy in an numerical way. And the trend to computational simulation methods is still further increasing, not only in mechanics, but practically in all branches of science. Numerical simulation will probablynot solve the world’s engineering problems, but it will help for a better understanding of the mechanisms of our models.

Nonsmooth Mechanics Excerpt :

Now in its third edition, this standard reference is a comprehensive treatment of nonsmooth mechanical systems refocused to give more prominence to issues connected with control and modelling. It covers Lagrangian and Newton–Euler systems, detailing mathematical tools such as convex analysis and complementarity theory. The ways in which nonsmooth mechanics influence and are influenced by well-posedness analysis, numerical analysis and simulation, modelling and control are explained. Contact/impact laws, stability theory and trajectory-tracking control are given detailed exposition connected by a mathematical framework formed from complementarity systems and measure-differential inclusions. Links are established with electrical circuits with set-valued nonsmooth elements as well as with other nonsmooth dynamical systems like impulsive and piecewise linear systems. Nonsmooth Mechanics (third edition) retains the topical structure familiar from its predecessors but has been substantially rewritten, edited and updated to account for the significant body of results that have emerged in the twenty-first century—including developments in: the existence and uniqueness of solutions; impact models; extension of the Lagrange–Dirichlet theorem and trajectory tracking; and well-posedness of contact complementarity problems with and without friction. Many figures (both new and redrawn to improve the clarity of the presentation) and examples are used to illustrate the theoretical developments. Material introducing the mathematics of nonsmooth mechanics has been improved to reflect the broad range of applications interest that has developed since publication of the second edition. The detail of some mathematical essentials is provided in four appendices. With its improved bibliography of over 1,300 references and wide-ranging coverage, Nonsmooth Mechanics (third edition) is sure to be an invaluable resource for researchers and postgraduates studying the control of mechanical
