  • Genre: Medical
  • Pages : 221
  • ISBN 10 : 9789401106771

The Genetics of Cancer Book Description :

It has been recognized for almost 200 years that certain families seem to inherit cancer. It is only in the past decade, however, that molecular genetics and epidemiology have combined to define the role of inheritance in cancer more clearly, and to identify some of the genes involved. The causative genes can be tracked through cancer-prone families via genetic linkage and positional cloning. Several of the genes discovered have subsequently been proved to play critical roles in normal growth and development. There are also implications for the families themselves in terms of genetic testing with its attendant dilemmas, if it is not clear that useful action will result. The chapters in The Genetics of Cancer illustrate what has already been achieved and take a critical look at the future directions of this research and its potential clinical applications.

Rare Tumors and Tumor like Conditions in Urological Pathology Book Description :

This book is a comprehensive guide to rare tumors and tumor-like conditions of the urinary system and male genital organs. It comprises five chapters, devoted to the kidney, bladder, prostate, testes, and penis. Each chapter begins with a brief overview of “common” tumors and tumor-like conditions and with a section on the classification of both common and rare entities. The main clinical, pathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings for each rare tumor or tumor-like condition are then described and discussed. Significant characteristics are also documented by representative high-quality illustrations, with emphasis on those aspects of most relevance to differential diagnosis. In addition, prognostic features are fully covered. Urological Pathology: Rare Tumors and Tumor-Like Conditions will be ideal source of core information and practical guidance for residents, fellows, pathologists, urologists, and oncologists.

  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release Date : 2012-03
  • Genre: Science
  • Pages : 156
  • ISBN 10 : 9781462065011

Discrete Event Physics Book Description :

"Discrete Event Physics" introduces a new branch of Physics concerned with elucidating the meaning of concepts traditionally studied in that discipline. It is complementary to Mathematical and Experimental Physics, being focused on the same ideas but having different specific goals. The theory has a fundamentally dynamic nature based on structured discrete events. Events are defined and interrelated using a formal language developed for such purposes. This volume extends the theory and discusses applications that clarify its utility in overcoming imperfections in traditional approaches to the treatment of Physics problems: the general inadequacy of the operational paradigm for property definition the long standing problem of probability definition confusion arising from indiscriminate use of the term "wave" the definition of meaning, knowledge and understanding in science the definitions of energy and entropy the solution of the paradox of Einstein, Podolski and Rosen the solution of non-locality problems in double slit interference experiments"

Molecular Biology of B Cell and T Cell Development Book Description :

Despite the tremendous diversity of the cells of the hematopoietic system, they are all derived from common precursor cells that are generated in the fetus and persist into adult life. In this regard, Band T lymphocytes, which comprise the two arms of the antigen-specific and inducible immune system, though functionally very different, are descendants of the same stem cell precursor. In the past several years, we have witnessed an explosion of information regarding the process by which differentiation of B-and T-cells from stem cells occurs. This information, like the answers to most important biological questions, has come from multiple and diverse directions. Because all hematopoietic cells arise from common precursors, complex regulatory processes must be involved in determining commitment to various lineages. Understanding commitment to the B- or T-cell lineage remains incomplete; however, identification of transcription factors necessary for progression along specific B-and T-cell pathways suggests that we are on the verge of understanding the molecules involved in the initial fate-determining steps. Studies of this type previously could be accomplished only in nonmammalian systems that are more amenable to genetic approaches. However, new technologies allow increasingly elegant and informative studies in mammalian systems, particularly for cells of the hematopoietic system.
