Research Funding in Neuroscience Excerpt :

The book is a history of the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience and an assessment of its effectiveness in advancing neuroscience. The book discusses the Fund's early and steady commitment to basic science as well as it's tradition of leveraging relatively modest dollars to make a big difference in careers and the field overall. The fund exists strictly to give awards and create a community of peers through an annual conference dedicated to research. In near unison, scientists who have received awards say they were able to test a risky idea, get their career off the ground, or make a significant change in their career because of McKnight's flexible dollars. The book consists of three parts: (1) origins--including both the funder and the scientists who shaped the program; (2) a review of the science to show how McKnight awardees have advanced the field; and (3) 10 keys to success. We also have an interview with Julius Axelrod (one of the early advisors, done shortly before his death in 2004) and stories of how awardees used their McKnight grants, plus other information.

Nutritional Cognitive Neuroscience Research at the Crossroads of Nutrition Psychology and Neuroscience Excerpt :

Nutritional Cognitive Neuroscience is an emerging interdisciplinary field of research that seeks to understand nutrition’s impact on human cognition and brain health across the life span. Research in this burgeoning field demonstrates that many aspects of nutrition – from entire diets to specific nutrients – affect brain structure and function, and therefore have profound implications for understanding the nature of psychological health, aging, and disease. The aim of this Research Topic in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience is to examine recent empirical and theoretical contributions from Nutritional Cognitive Neuroscience, with an emphasis on the following primary areas of inquiry. Nutrition and Brain Health An enduring aim of research in the nutritional sciences is to discover specific nutrients and dietary patterns that enhance cognitive function and brain health in the elderly. Although an abundance of evidence supports a single or a few nutrients for the promotion of cognitive performance and brain health, clinical trials using nutritional supplementation have been predominately unsuccessful. Further research is therefore needed to better characterize the contributions of specific nutrients and nutrient combinations to cognitive performance and brain health. Moderators of Nutrition’s Impact on the Brain A second major area of research in Nutritional Cognitive Neuroscience investigates the mechanisms that underlie the effects of nutrition on brain health at the cellular, molecular, and circuit levels. Accumulating evidence indicates that the effects of nutrition on brain health are complex and multifactorial, reflecting the influence of particular nutrient combinations on specific brain networks and taking into account several moderating factors. Considerably more research is needed to elucidate the complex interactions between nutrition and known moderating variables – including age, nutritional status, genes, environment, and lifestyle – in determini

Neuro Excerpt :

How the new brain sciences are transforming our understanding of what it means to be human The brain sciences are influencing our understanding of human behavior as never before, from neuropsychiatry and neuroeconomics to neurotheology and neuroaesthetics. Many now believe that the brain is what makes us human, and it seems that neuroscientists are poised to become the new experts in the management of human conduct. Neuro describes the key developments—theoretical, technological, economic, and biopolitical—that have enabled the neurosciences to gain such traction outside the laboratory. It explores the ways neurobiological conceptions of personhood are influencing everything from child rearing to criminal justice, and are transforming the ways we "know ourselves" as human beings. In this emerging neuro-ontology, we are not "determined" by our neurobiology: on the contrary, it appears that we can and should seek to improve ourselves by understanding and acting on our brains. Neuro examines the implications of this emerging trend, weighing the promises against the perils, and evaluating some widely held concerns about a neurobiological "colonization" of the social and human sciences. Despite identifying many exaggerated claims and premature promises, Neuro argues that the openness provided by the new styles of thought taking shape in neuroscience, with its contemporary conceptions of the neuromolecular, plastic, and social brain, could make possible a new and productive engagement between the social and brain sciences. The Research Funding Toolkit Excerpt :

Writing high quality grant applications is easier when you know how research funding agencies work and how your proposal is treated in the decision-making process. The Research Funding Toolkit provides this knowledge and teaches you the necessary skills to write high quality grant applications. A complex set of factors determine whether research projects win grants. This handbook helps you understand these factors and then face and overcome your personal barriers to research grant success. The guidance also extends to real-world challenges of grant-writing, such as obtaining the right feedback, dealing effectively with your employer and partner institutions, and making multiple applications efficiently. There are many sources that will tell you what a fundable research grant application looks like. Very few help you learn the skills you need to write one. The Toolkit fills this gap with detailed advice on creating and testing applications that are readable, understandable and convincing.
