The Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus Excerpt :

While sea cucumber is one of China's and Asia’s most prized seafoods, and aquaculture programs are being developed on a huge commercial scale, Chinese expertise and knowledge in this area has not been well disseminated worldwide. The Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus is the first book to bridge this gap by compiling key information related to hatchery and aquaculture techniques, nutritional and medical values, markets, and trade flow of the number one sea cucumber species. It summarizes the historical and most recent developments in the trade and aquaculture of Apostichopus japonicus, as well as important aspects of its anatomy, population dynamics, reproduction, development, physiology, and biochemistry. With sea cucumber harvest and aquaculture booming worldwide, comprehensive knowledge of China’s technological breakthroughs in this rapidly expanding field is key. The Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus is essential to understanding the cultural underpinnings of the insatiable market demands for sea cucumber and what drives sea cucumber trade. It also provides biological information and aquaculture techniques that can be adapted to other species, making it a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners involved in sea cucumber harvesting, aquaculture, and conservation. Explores the historical and current importance of Apostichopus japonicus in China, Japan, and the two Koreas Presents innovative production technologies in sea cucumber aquaculture Provides the latest scientific methods to maximize efficiency and production Includes important information on the design and operation of farms Discusses hot topics, current challenges, and future opportunities in aquaculture Highlights important advances in the study of sea cucumbers at the behavioral, cellular, and molecular levels

Oceanography and Marine Biology Excerpt :

Ever-increasing interest in oceanography and marine biology and their relevance to global environmental issues create a demand for authoritative reviews summarizing the results of recent research. Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review has catered to this demand since its founding by the late Harold Barnes more than 50 years ago. Its objectives are to consider, annually, the basic areas of marine research, returning to them when appropriate in future volumes; to deal with subjects of special and topical importance; and to add new subjects as they arise. The favourable reception and complimentary reviews accorded to all the volumes shows that the series is fulfilling a very real need. Volume 54 follows closely the objectives and style of the earlier volumes, continuing to regard the marine sciences—with all their various aspects—as a unity. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of marine science are dealt with by experts actively engaged in these fields. The series is an essential reference text for researchers and students in all fields of marine science and related subjects, and it finds a place in libraries of universities, marine laboratories, research institutes and government departments. It is consistently among the highest ranking series in terms of impact factor in the marine biology category of the citation indices compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information/Web of Science.

Rise Ye Sea Slugs Excerpt :

Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! is a book of many faces. First, it is a book of translated haiku and contains over 900 of these short Japanese poems in the original (smoothly inserted in the main body),with phonetic and literal renditions, as well as the authors English translations and explanations. All but a dozen or two of the haiku are translated for the first time. There is an index of poets, poems and a bibliography. Second, it is a book of sea slug haiku, for all of the poems are about holothurians, which scientists prefer to call sea cucumbers. (The word cucumber is long for haiku and metaphorically unsuitable for many poems, so poetic license was taken.) With this book, the namako, as the sea cucumber is called in Japanese, becomes the most translated single subject in haiku, surpassing the harvest moon, the snow, the cuckoo, butterflies and even cherry blossoms. Third, it is a book of original haiku. While the authors original intent was to include only genuine old haiku (dating back to the 17th century), modern haiku were added and, eventually, Keigu (Gills haiku name) composed about a hundred of his own to help fill out gaps in the metaphorical museum. For many if not most modern haiku taken from the web, it is also their first time in print! Fourth, it is a book of metaphor. How may we arrange hundreds of poems on a single theme? Gill divides them into 21 main metaphors, including the Cold Sea Slug, the Mystic Sea Slug, the Helpless Sea Slug, the Slippery Sea Slug, the Silent Sea Slug, and the Melancholy Sea Slug, giving each a chapter, within which the metaphors may be further subdivided, and adds a 100 pages of Sundry Sea Slugs (scores of varieties including Monster, Spam, Flying, Urban Myth, and Exploding). Fifth, it is a book on haiku. E ditors usually select only the best haiku, but, Gill includes good and bad haiku by everyone from the 17th century haiku master to the anonymous haiku rejected in some internet contest. This is not to say all poems found were i

This conference aims to provide a platform for academics and practitioners around the world to share ideas and knowledge, as well as promoting research in Blue Economy through paper presentation. The theme of MEBIC 2021 was “Marine-Sociopreneurship: Real Action for Blue Economy”. The papers are classified into 6 subthemes, namely Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises; Blue Economy Supporting Ecosystems; Financial Institution for Blue Economy; Adaptive MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition) Business; Islamic Financing Models for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises; and Utilization of Technology in Blue Economy. The proceeding consists of 17 high-quality papers that were selected. Aside from the high quality technical paper presentations, the technical program also featured a keynote speaker and six invited speakers. The keynote speaker was Dr. Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno (Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Republic of Indonesia). The invited speakers were Prof. Gunter Pauli from Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives (ZERI), Belgium; Prof. M. Kabir Hassan from University of New Orleans, USA; Prof. Henri Jean-Marie Dou from University of Aix-Marseille, France; Dr. Zhiwei Zhang from First Institute of Oceanography, China; Elvia R. Shauki, Ph.D. from University of South Australia, Australia; and Dr. M. Mahbubi Ali from International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies, Malaysia.
