Challenging Cases in Musculoskeletal Imaging Excerpt :

Learn the art of diagnostic radiology—From symptom to diagnosis Every abnormal finding in diagnostic imaging derives from an underlying structural pathoanatomic change that must be identified before an accurate diagnosis can be made. Factual knowledge alone is not always enough to make a clinically useful diagnosis. More can be gained by taking a systematic approach to image analysis and piecing together available facts. Lack of this awareness can lead to wasted time and unnecessary costs. Every radiologist must provide two essential services: selecting the proper imaging study and interpreting the images. This book shows how even difficult cases can be diagnosed by taking a systematic approach to image interpretation. Drawing upon decades of experience, the author guides the reader from case to case while solving the essential problems that arise in making a diagnosis. He shows how initially challenging cases can be turned into cases that only seemed difficult at the outset. Step-by-step approach Systematic case presentations: prior history and clinical question, radiologic findings, pathoanatomic classification, synopsis and discussion, final diagnosis, and comments Arranged by anatomic regions: skull, spine, pelvis, shoulder girdle and thoracic cage, upper and lower limbs More than 1,400 high-quality images from the author's case files, with each finding illustrated by numerous images More than 150 difficult and challenging cases from skeletal radiology Answers questions such as: What are the requirements of a good diagnosis? How is a good diagnosis defined? Which imaging procedure will yield the desired information most quickly and accurately? Describes the imaging modalities and gives recommendations on selecting a particular modality Your instructor in book form—systematic, case-by-case approach to making a diagnosis!

This book communicates the latest findings in pediatric orthopedics and answers key everyday questions in the field in an informative, readily understandable manner. The scope is comprehensive, encompassing all aspects of diagnosis and therapy. After an opening section on basic principles, the two main sections discuss diseases and injuries by site and cover systemic conditions including trauma, infections, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, tumors and hereditary diseases. The book is the translation of the latest edition of the well-known classic Kinderorthopädie in der Praxis, which presents the collected knowledge of experts from Basel University Children's Hospital – Fritz Hefti and his co-workers Reinald Brunner, Carol Claudius Hasler, and Gernot Jundt. This edition has been revised and updated in a variety of ways. New findings are incorporated into all chapters, important advances in treatment are presented and the latest concepts in tumor diagnosis and neuro-orthopedics are discussed. The book contains more than 150 additional illustrations, including new clinical images and radiographs and many further amusing cartoons by Franz Freuler. The aim is to make children’s orthopedics fun – in both practice and theory! The book has received several awards.

The well-structured specialized chapters detail the characteristics of individual injuries with corresponding case studies. Thus, the book offers a learning opportunity but can also be used as a practical daily reference to facilitate orientation. Three chapters focus on options for the correction of injuries that have healed poorly. The book offers exceptional value through:- Classifications of fractures and injuries Schematic drawings of typical fractures with developmental characteristics Structured overview tables for all regions of injury with representation of the fracture types and their characteristic radiographs Presentation of conservative and operative treatment options and illustration of all typical situations

At the Annual Closed Meetings of the ISS prominent scientists representing many countries from all over the world gather to exchange ideas in the fields of radiology, pathology, orthopedic surgery, nephrology, and endocrinology. Follow ing these meetings Refresher Courses are offered for students, physicians in train ing, and interested collegues from the various medical specialities. The purpose of these courses is to present the latest developments in clinical practice and research with regard to skeletal diseases. The Society's internationally well-known journal "Skeletal Radiology", which is published by Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, adds in exchanging updated developments in the field of skeletal disorders. The hereby presented first Book of Members contains a record summarizing the most important milestones and events of the history of the International Skeletal Society up to 1987 in the form of short biographies regarding the members of the Society. The Double Dynamic Martin Screw DMS Excerpt :

The scope and importance of hip fractures is almost incomprehensible. With a world wide incidence of close to 2 million cases per year, these fractures pose a daunting challenge to our ability to affect and treat this epidemic. The incidence of these fractures is predicted to grow to 6 million in 2050 including a near term baby boom spike. Add the hospital mortality rate of up to 4% and the one mortality of from 8% to 20% and the life ending effect of these fractures becomes a glaring reality. Of those who initially survive their fracture, about 50% never walk the same again. The social problem in the care of these elderly people is enormous. Of course, any real solution to this problem will include education, prevention, surgical and hospital treatment protocols, long term rehabilitative efforts, social - justments and a generous contribution of money. This publication is primarily directed to the amplification of a new treatment modality that addresses only a fraction of the problem. It is, however, a quantum leap in the evolution of fixation with compression hip screws which are still the gold standard for surgical stabilization of pertrochanteric hip fractures. The Dynamic Martin Screw (DMS) addresses the issue of adjustability of the fixation angle with appropriate mechanical strength characteristics that were la- ing in its historical predecessors.
