While many researchers have investigated the performance consequences of automated recommender systems, little research that has explored how these systems impact the de- cision making process. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how people process information from an automated recommender system and raw information from the en- vironment using Systems Factorial Technology (SFT). Participants completed a speeded length judgment task with a reliable but imperfect aid. Experiment 1 focused on whether people process all the available information or are selective in their information search under certain circumstances (e.g., with performance incentives and with more experience with automation failures in training). Results indicate that participants likely use only one source of information, alternating between the automated aid and the environmental infor- mation. Additionally, performance incentives and less experience with automation failures can lead to slower but not necessarily more accurate performance with an automated aid. Experiment 2 focused on whether display design (e.g, proximity of information and density of information) can encourage serial or parallel processing of information. Unsurprisingly, the results indicate that integrating information on the display allows participants to process information more efficiently. Implications of this research not only sheds light on how peo- ple gather and process information with an automation aid but also how we might design systems to improve decision performance.

Although there is substantial evidence supporting the existence of chunking in Working Memory, much of it is dependent on a small range of experimental methods, many of which rely on accuracy measures. Consequently, I feel there is a need to develop a new method for studying chunking. In this paper, I propose one such method, adapted from a perceptual research method known as Systems Factorial Technology, to determine whether a given pair of features is chunked or maintained as separate objects. In addition, I test this method on two pairs of stimuli through four experiments, testing whether the features are processed together or separately in both perception and memory. The current research finds no evidence for chunking in either feature pair considered.

To deal with the abundant amount of information in the environment in order to achieve our goals, human beings adopt a strategy to accumulate some information and filter out other information to ultimately make decisions. Since the development of cognitive science in the 1960s, researchers have been interested in understanding how human beings process and accumulate information for decision-making. Researchers have conducted extensive behavioral studies and applied a wide range of modeling tools to study human behavior in simple-detection tasks and two-choice decision tasks (e.g., discrimination, classification). In general, researchers often assume that the manner in which information is processed for decision-making is invariant across individuals given a particular experimental context. Independent variables, including speed-accuracy instructions, stimulus properties (i.e., intensity), and characteristics of the participants (i.e., aging, cognitive ability) are assumed to affect the parameters in a model (i.e., speed of information accumulation, response bias) but not the way that participants process information (e.g., the order of information processing). Given these assumptions, much modeling has been accomplished based on the grouped data, rather than the individual data. However, a growing number of studies have demonstrated that there were individual differences in the perceptual decision process. In the same task context, different groups of the participants may process information in different manners. The capacity and architecture of the decision mechanism were found to vary across individuals, implying that humans’ decision strategies can vary depending on the context to maximize their performance.
