Defy All the Devils Excerpt :

The “fascinating, hair-raising, suspenseful” account of a little boy abducted in broad daylight and the desperate manhunt to find him (The New York Times Book Review). On July 1, 1874, four-year-old Charley Ross and his older brother, Walter, were playing in front of their stately Philadelphia home when a horse-drawn carriage pulled up with two men who offered candy and fireworks if the boys would ride with them. Hours later, Walter came back, stating that they had ridden through the city until the men abandoned him in the street but kept Charley. Soon after, their father, Christian K. Ross, received a demand for $20,000 in return for his son. Ross went to the police for help—and before long, the case became a national phenomenon. A popular song pleaded for the boy’s safe return. The Philadelphia police searched every home in the city, and thousands of people falsely reported that they had seen Charley or knew his whereabouts. Meanwhile, the kidnappers’ ransom letters were becoming more threatening and bizarre. The press, eager to fan the flames of hysteria, printed wholly fabricated stories and even accused Christian Ross of orchestrating the whole thing in order to hide the fact that Charley was illegitimate. And then the men who took Charley went silent . . . This is the chilling true story of a crime that transfixed a still-growing America, the unlikely series of events that produced the case’s most tantalizing clues, and the tragic twist of fate that plunged the Ross family back into darkness and haunted them for decades to come. The Prince of Darkness Excerpt :

The Devil, Satan, Lucifer, Mephistopheles - throughout history the Prince of Darkness, the Western world's most powerful symbol of evil, has taken many names and shapes. Jeffrey Burton Russell here chronicles the remarkable story of the Devil from antiquity to the present. While recounting how past generations have personified evil, he deepens our understanding of the ways in which people have dealt with the enduring problem of radical evil. After a compelling essay on the nature of evil, Russell uncovers the origins of the concept of the Devil in various early cultures and then traces its evolution in Western thought from the time of the ancient Hebrews through the first centuries of the Christian era. Next he turns to the medieval view of the Devil, focusing on images found in folklore, scholastic thought, art, literature, mysticism, and witchcraft. Finally, he follows the Devil into our own era, where he draws on examples from theology, philosophy, art, literature, and popular culture to describe the great changes in this traditional notion of evil brought about by the intellectual and cultural developments of modern times. Is the Devil an outmoded superstition, as most educated people today believe? Or do the horrors of the twentieth century and the specter of nuclear war make all too clear the continuing need for some vital symbol of radical evil? A single-volume distillation of Russell's epic tetralogy on the nature and personifcation of evil from ancient times to the present (published by Cornell University Press between 1977 and 1986), The Prince of Darkness invites readers to confront these and other critical questions as they explore the past faces of that figure who has been called the second most famous personage in Christianity.

The Christian Faith Excerpt :

from the Preface: The subject of this book is not 'apologetics' but 'dogmatics': that is, it is intended primarily, not for those who are outside, but for those who are inside the Christian fold. It is our duty as Christians to try to bring all men to the knowledge of the truth; but we cannot do so, unless we ourselves know clearly what the Christian religion is. The lectures on which this book is based were given, through many years, to Anglican candidates for ordination, and were at all times subjected to their criticism. Readers are warned, as they were warned, to take no statement for granted, but to check it for themselves. No belief is really ours until we have made it our own (St. John 4:42). This book is intended chiefly for members of the Anglican churches, which, though they have no doctrines peculiar to themselves, have a standpoint and an emphasis of their own, which is given here without qualification or apology.ÊFor this reason, more space is devoted to Anglican authority, formularies, and organization, than might otherwise be justified....

Saving Power Excerpt :

Jesus' death and resurrection are undeniably central to the Christian faith. But how, precisely, is their significance to be understood? Concerned to reinvigorate the church's teaching on the cross, the resurrection, and salvation -- the atonement -- Peter Schmiechen here invites readers to rediscover the wealth of the Christian tradition. In "Saving Power he makes ample use of primary sources to unpack ten distinct theories of atonement, welcoming aspects of each rather than championing only one. Along the way, he demonstrates that while most Christians assume the basic theme of atonement to be sin and forgiveness, other powerful themes -- liberation from oppressive powers, reconciliation in the face of division, and the hope of resurrection in the face of death, for instance -- also deserve to be studied and preached. Affirming orthodox teaching while offering a positive take on marginal views, "Saving Power is a crucial resource for anyone who seeks a fuller understanding of Christ's work.

The Cause of Our Salvation Excerpt :

This dissertation offers an in depth study of the soteriologies of Colin Gunton, Paul Fiddes, Vernon White and John McIntyre and attemps to identify and evaluate their contribution to constructing an ecumenically sensitive soteriology for the twenty-first century. The book focuses on a crucial question: just how are we saved by Jesus Christ? Is the church right in claiming that salvation comes about through the suffering and death of Christ on the cross as is expressed so often in her liturgical prayers?

The Works of the Enemy Satan and His Demonic Forces Excerpt :

Satan and his forces are waging a war against humanity, but the sad thing is, many Christians are not aware of the extent of this warfare. This a spiritual warfare, and the Bible teaches a lot about the works of the enemy and the spiritual warfare, so I decided to write on this topic to bring light to what Satan and his forces are doing in this world. The works of the enemy, what Satan and his demonic forces are doing, are well outlined in this book, and I have backed every work of the enemy with the Word of God. Satan and his forces are working twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, four weeks a month, and twelve months a year. They work all the year, without any vacation. The major work of the enemy is to get Christians to sin against God and to diminish their faith in God. In the world, Satan is using money, sex, and power to keep many people from knowing God through his Son, Jesus Christ. Money is the root of all evil, so many evil and untold hardship come to fruitful in the name of money. Satan and his forces are working in all the four corners around the world to keep people away from knowing God. One may be praying on a topic for a long time without any answer, then, the enemy will tell you that your God cannot answer your prayers, and if you listen to the enemy, then your faith in God will diminish. Whatever God hates is what Satan loves; for example, God says, “I hate divorce,” and Satan will say, “I love divorce.” Satan may keep you not only in poverty but in debt. Satan may take away your health, which may come along with sadness and depression. Satan is crafty and cunning, so we may only attack him in the name, which is above any other name in heaven or on earth or under the earth, which is Jesus Christ. As you read on, you are going to see how the enemy is fighting the spiritual warfare with his demonic forces. The Bible tells us how Christians will be able to wage this spiritual warfare against Satan and his forces. Looking at Ephesians 6:
