Renewable Energy Consumption Economic Growth Nexus in Italy Excerpt :

This study examines the renewable energy consumption-economic growth nexus in Italy over the period 1970-2007. Results of unit root tests show that all variables are non-stationary in their level form, but stationary in first differences. Cointegration analysis reveals that a single long-run relationship emerges. According to the long-run estimations, if renewable energy consumption increases by 1%, real gross domestic product (GDP) decreases by 0.23%. The Toda and Yamamoto approach shows that exists a unidirectional causal flow, running from renewable energy consumption to aggregate income, in line with the “growth hypothesis.” Moreover, these results are confirmed by Granger causality tests. Forecast error variance decomposition evidence that the forecast errors in real GDP are mainly due to uncertainty in GDP itself and renewable energy consumption, while the errors in predicting the renewable energy consumption are sensitive to disturbances only in energy equation.

Revisiting the Energy Consumption Growth Nexus for Croatia Excerpt :

This paper applies the most recently developed autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) co-integration procedure to re-investigate co-integration and the causal relationship between energy consumption and real GDP within a multivariate framework that includes capital stock and labor input for Croatia during the 1952-2011 period. The empirical results fully support a positive long-run co-integrated relationship between production inputs and real GDP and the important role of energy in economic growth. It is found that a unidirectional causality runs from total final energy consumption to real GDP in the long run and that a bidirectional causality in the short run, which means that energy is a necessary requirement for economic growth. Additionally, the reduction in energy consumption could adversely affect GDP in the short and long run. Therefore, Croatia should adopt a more vigorous economic policy aimed toward increasing investments in installed energy capacities and reforming the economic structure towards re-industrialization and more energy-efficient industries.

The Land Water Energy Nexus Excerpt :

This report contributes to the discussion of interconnections between scarce resources by highlighting the nexus between land, water and energy (the LWE nexus). It focuses on a dynamic, integrated, and disaggregated analysis of how land, water and energy interact in the biophysical and economic systems. The report provides projections for the biophysical and economic consequences of nexus bottlenecks until 2060, highlighting that while the LWE nexus is essentially local, there can be significant large-scale repercussions in vulnerable regions, notably on forest cover and in terms of food and water security. The analysis is based on coupling a gridded biophysical systems model with a multi-regional, multi-sectoral dynamic general equilibrium modelling assessment. Numerical insights are provided by investigating a carefully selected set of scenarios that are designed to illustrate the key bottlenecks: one scenario for each resource bottleneck, plus two scenarios that combine all bottlenecks, with and without an overlay of climate change.

Energy Consumption and Economic Growth Nexus in Ghana Excerpt :

The main purpose of this study is to examine the nexus between energy consumption disaggregated into Petroleum and Electricity Consumption and Economic Growth in Ghana in a cointegrated VAR framework. The Johansen test of cointegration indicates that there is no long run relationship between electricity consumption and economic growth. On the other hand, the Johansen test of cointegration indicates that there is a positive long run relationship between petroleum consumption and economic growth. Since there was no existence of long run relationship between electricity consumption and economic growth, the variables were first differenced, and the causality test conducted in a VAR framework. The results of the Granger causality based on the VAR revealed that there is a unidirectional causality from economic growth to electricity consumption in Ghana. The granger causality based on the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) revealed that there is a unidirectional causality running from petroleum consumption to economic growth in both the short and long run. The impulse response function shows that economic growth responds positively to shocks in petroleum consumption whiles electricity consumption responds positively to a shock in economic growth. It is recommended that appropriate electricity conservation measures should be developed and intensified since this will not retard growth in the economy. Also, petroleum consumption seems to be an important principal factor in short run as well as in the long run for the Ghanaian economy, policies should therefore be targeted at making constant and available petroleum products so that the Ghanaian economy can grow positively.

Resource Accounting for Sustainability Assessment Excerpt :

The demands placed on land, water, energy and other natural resources are exacerbated as the world population continues to increase together with the expectations of economic growth. This, combined with concerns over environmental change, presents a set of scientific, policy and management issues that are critical for sustainability. Resource Accounting for Sustainability Assessment: The nexus between energy, food, water and land use offers an approach for multi-scale, integrated assessment of this nexus. It presents a comprehensive and original method of resource accounting for integrated sustainability assessments. The approach is illustrated with three detailed case studies: the islands of Mauritius, the Indian state of Punjab, and the energy economy of South Africa. The relationships between flows of goods, services and materials in these case studies offer valuable insights. The book provides a much needed quality control on the information used in deliberative processes about policy and planning activities. This innovative book will be of interest to researchers, students and practitioners in the fields of sustainability science, international development, industrial ecology, sustainable resource management, geography and ecological economics.

Natural Gas Consumption and Economic Growth Nexus Excerpt :

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between natural gas consumption and economic growth of France.Design/methodology/approach: To analyze the relationship, an extended Cobb-Douglas production function is used. The auto-regressive distributive lag bounds testing approach is applied to test the existence of the long-run relationship between the series. The vector error correction model Granger causality approach is implemented to detect the direction of causal relation between the variables.Findings: The results show that variables are cointegrated for the long-run relationship. They also indicate that natural gas consumption, exports, capital and labor are the contributing factors to economic growth in France. The causality analysis indicates that feedback hypothesis is validated between gas consumption and economic growth. The bidirectional causality is also found between exports and economic growth, gas consumption and exports and capital and gas consumption.Research limitations/implications: The feedback hypothesis between gas consumption and economic growth implies that adoption of energy conservation policies should be discouraged; rather, gas consumption and economic growth policies should be jointly implemented.Originality/value: This study is an original work for France and shows the results of the relationship between natural gas consumption and economic growth. In line with the results of this study, new direction for policy makers is opened up to formulate a comprehensive energy policy to sustain long-term economic growth in France.

The Water Food Energy and Climate Nexus Excerpt :

Global trends of population growth, rising living standards and the rapidly increasing urbanized world are increasing the demand on water, food and energy. Added to this is the growing threat of climate change which will have huge impacts on water and food availability. It is increasingly clear that there is no place in an interlinked world for isolated solutions aimed at just one sector. In recent years the "nexus" has emerged as a powerful concept to capture these inter-linkages of resources and is now a key feature of policy-making. This book is one of the first to provide a broad overview of both the science behind the nexus and the implications for policies and sustainable development. It brings together contributions by leading intergovernmental and governmental officials, industry, scientists and other stakeholder thinkers who are working to develop the approaches to the Nexus of water-food-energy and climate. It represents a major synthesis and state-of-the-art assessment of the Nexus by major players, in light of the adoption by the United Nations of the new Sustainable Development Goals and Targets in 2015. Sustainable Development and Resource Productivity Excerpt :

The fourth Factor X publication from the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA), Sustainable Development and Resource Productivity: The Nexus Approaches explores the interdependencies of sustainable development paths and associated resource requirements, describing and analysing the necessities for a more resource efficient world. The use of and competition for increasingly scarce resources are growing worldwide with current production and consumption patterns of industrialised economies soon to reach the point where the ecosphere will be overtaxed far beyond its limits. Against this background, this volume examines the important initiatives to monitor resource use at the international, EU and national level. The current trends and challenges related to sustainable resource use are discussed, including international challenges for a resource efficient world, megatrends, justice and equitable access to resources. In the second part of the book, contributions examine implementation strategies. They assess the concept known as circular economy and discuss the theory of growth and the role of the financial and education systems. The final section places special emphasis on practical examples. Overall, the book presents concrete ways and examples of achieving more sustainability in practice. Discussing solutions for a more sustainable use of natural resources, this book is essential reading for scholars and students of natural resources and sustainable development and decision-makers and experts from the fields of policy development, industry and civil society.

Beyond Traditional Probabilistic Methods in Economics Excerpt :

This book presents recent research on probabilistic methods in economics, from machine learning to statistical analysis. Economics is a very important – and at the same a very difficult discipline. It is not easy to predict how an economy will evolve or to identify the measures needed to make an economy prosper. One of the main reasons for this is the high level of uncertainty: different difficult-to-predict events can influence the future economic behavior. To make good predictions and reasonable recommendations, this uncertainty has to be taken into account. In the past, most related research results were based on using traditional techniques from probability and statistics, such as p-value-based hypothesis testing. These techniques led to numerous successful applications, but in the last decades, several examples have emerged showing that these techniques often lead to unreliable and inaccurate predictions. It is therefore necessary to come up with new techniques for processing the corresponding uncertainty that go beyond the traditional probabilistic techniques. This book focuses on such techniques, their economic applications and the remaining challenges, presenting both related theoretical developments and their practical applications.
