The Physiology of Exercise in Spinal Cord Injury Excerpt :

Every year, around the world, between 250,000 and 500,000 people suffer a spinal cord injury (SCI). Those with an SCI are two to five times more likely to die prematurely than people without a spinal cord injury, with worse survival rates in low- and middle-income countries. Dynamic aerobic requires integrated physiologic responses across the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, autonomic, pulmonary, thermoregulatory, and immunologic systems. Moreover, regular aerobic exercise beneficially impacts these same systems, reducing the risk for a range of diseases and maladies. This book will present comprehensive information on the unique physiologic effects of SCI and the potential role of exercise in treating and mitigating these effects. In addition, it will incorporate work from scientists across a number of disciplines and have contributors at multiple levels of investigation and across physiologic systems. Furthermore, SCI can be considered an accelerated form of aging due to the severely restricted physical inactivity imposed, usually at an early age. Therefore, the information presented may have a broader importance to the physiology of aging as it relates to inactivity. Lastly, the need for certain levels of regular aerobic exercise to engender adaptations beneficial to health is not altered by the burden of an SCI. Indeed, the amounts of exercise necessary may be even greater than the able-bodied due to ‘passive’ ambulation. This book will also address the potential health benefits for those with an SCI that can be realized if a sufficient exercise stimulus is provided.

Clinical Exercise Physiology, Second Edition, provides a comprehensive look at the clinical aspects of exercise physiology by thoroughly examining the relationship between exercise and chronic disease. Updated and revised, this second edition reflects important changes that have occurred in the field since the first edition was published. It will provide professionals and students with fundamental knowledge of disease-specific pathology and treatment guidelines while also guiding readers through the clinical exercise physiology associated with exercise testing and training of patients with a chronic disease. The second edition of Clinical Exercise Physiologybuilds on information presented in the previous edition with reorganized chapters, updated and revised content, and the latest information on the key practice areas of clinical exercise physiology: endocrinology, the metabolic system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, oncology, the immune system, bone and joint health, and the neuromuscular system. This second edition also features an online ancillary package, allowing instructors to more effectively convey the concepts presented in the text and prepare students for careers in the field. Clinical Exercise Physiology, Second Edition, is easy to navigate--the logical order of the chapters makes key information easy to find. The detailed chapters discuss 23 disease states and conditions that clinical exercise physiologists encounter in their work and provide guidance for the expert care of the populations discussed. Each chapter covers the scope of the condition; its physiology and pathophysiology and treatment options; clinical considerations, including the administration of a graded exercise test; and exercise prescription. The text also details how clinical exercise physiologists can most effectively address issues facing special populations, including children, the elderly, and female athletes. This comprehensive resource is an asset to new and

Management of Spinal Cord Injuries E Book Excerpt :

Combining 25 years of clinical, research and teaching experience, Dr Lisa Harvey provides an innovative 5-step approach to the physiotherapy management of people with spinal cord injury. Based on the International Classification of Functioning, this approach emphasises the importance of setting goals which are purposeful and meaningful to the patient. These goals are related to performance of motor tasks analysed in terms of 6 key impairments. The assessment and treatment performance of each of these impairments for people with spinal cord injury is described in the following chapters: training motor tasks strength training contracture management pain management respiratory management cardiovascular fitness training Dr Harvey develops readers' problem-solving skills equipping them to manage all types of spinal cord injuries. Central to these skills is an understanding of how people with different patterns of paralysis perform motor tasks and the importance of differentmuscles for motor tasks such as: transfers and bed mobility of people wheelchair mobility hand function for people with tetraplegia standing and walking with lower limb paralysis This book is for students and junior physiotherapists with little or no experience in the area of spinal cord injury but with a general understanding of the principles of physiotherapy. It is also a useful tool for experienced clinicians, including those keen to explore the evidence base that supports different physiotherapy interventions.

Thermoregulation, Part I: From Basic Neuroscience to Clinical Neurology, Volume 154, not only reviews how body temperature regulation changes in neurological diseases, but also how this aspect affects the course and outcomes of each disease. Other sections of the volume review three therapeutic approaches that are aimed at manipulating body temperature, including induced hypothermia, induced hyperthermia and antipyretic therapy. The book is comprised of nine sections across two volumes, five dealing with the basic aspects of body temperature regulation and four dealing with the clinical aspects. Basic sections cover the Thermoregulation system, Thermoreceptors, Thermoeffectors, Neural pathways, and Thermoregulation as a homeostatic function. In addition, the book covers the physiology and neuroanatomy of the thermoregulation system and provides descriptions of how the regulation of body temperature intervenes with other physiological functions (such as sleep, osmoregulation, and immunity), stress, exercise and aging. Basic sections serve as an introduction to the four clinical sections: Body Temperature, Clinical Significance, Abnormal Body Temperature, Thermoregulation in Neurological Disease and Therapeutic Interventions. Presents a clear, logical pathway from the fundamental physiology of thermoregulation, through neurobiology, to clinical applications and disease Enables researchers and clinicians to better understand the value of temperature measurement in disease and the use of temperature as a therapy Integrates content from a broad field of research, including topics on the molecular physiology of temperature receptors, to the management of accidental hypothermia

WHEELING AND DEALING evalutes the appropriateness of the biomedical and social models of understanding disability. 32 men and women living with spinal cord injury discuss their experiences and views on a wide range of topics including physical health, sexuality, dating, friendship, education, employment, religion and spirituality, and political and social ideologies. While respondents opinions challenge many widely-held myths about the disability, their views, are often at odds with those of disability activist scholars in the field.
