The Sundial Excerpt :

Family squabbles and apocalyptic prophecies come together in this unique, wonderful novel. In the wake of the Halloran family’s patriarch falling (or, perhaps, being pushed) down the stairs, his elderly mother seizes control of the family home and threatens to kicks many of the inhabitants out. This alone would be enough to cause an uproar, but his sister sees a vision in which he foretells a coming apocalypse that will only spare those left in Halloran house. Now the family must prepare for the coming of a strange, new world – and determine if anyone else will be invited to join them. The Sound of the Sundial Excerpt :

The Sound of the Sundial is the internationally acclaimed novel by Czech sensation Hana Andronikova, told over the course of a single day and night, but spanning three continents and much of the twentieth century. In this intimate and affecting love story about a Jewish teacher and a German-Czech builder, Andronikova sends her readers on a captivating journey through time and memory, from the Czech town of Zlín in the 1920s to Calcutta in the 1930s, Theresienstadt and Auschwitz during World War II, Toronto in the decades afterward, and finally into modern-day Colorado. It is at once a deeply personal narrative and an homage to the lost relationship of the Czech, German, and Jewish peoples. In 2002, The Sound of the Sundial received the Czech Republic’s prestigious Magnesia Litera Award in the category of Best New Discovery, just a few years before its young author died. It is making its world premiere appearance in English here.

Sundial Excerpt :

"L.C. Morse's Sundial is the defintive novel of the Black college experience. It captures vividly the depths of human passions shot through the intellectual and affective rites of passage in a turbulent time. Morse stands in the grand tradition of Ellison, Baldwin and Morrison!" - Cornel West, Princeton University "The 60s were a dramtic time in the lives of Black college students. Campuses, particularly Black ones, became the stage -- often the staging area -- for Black discontent and the search for new values. They were the places where Black heroes could be not only held but touched; where often the first confrontations with class and color prejudice, regional differences and adult authority took place. For many, it was during the college years when they came face to face for the first time with the tragedy of the death of peers; when love left indelible impressions on the heart; when traditions found meaning and adulthood finally arrived. All of these things are poignantly described by L.C. Morse in his novel Sundial." - ESSENCE Magazine

Africville Excerpt :

Finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award, Young People’s Literature – Illustrated Books When a young girl visits the site of Africville, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the stories she’s heard from her family come to mind. She imagines what the community was once like — the brightly painted houses nestled into the hillside, the field where boys played football, the pond where all the kids went rafting, the bountiful fishing, the huge bonfires. Coming out of her reverie, she visits the present-day park and the sundial where her great- grandmother’s name is carved in stone, and celebrates a summer day at the annual Africville Reunion/Festival. Africville was a vibrant Black community for more than 150 years. But even though its residents paid municipal taxes, they lived without running water, sewers, paved roads and police, fire-truck and ambulance services. Over time, the city located a slaughterhouse, a hospital for infectious disease, and even the city garbage dump nearby. In the 1960s, city officials decided to demolish the community, moving people out in city dump trucks and relocating them in public housing. Today, Africville has been replaced by a park, where former residents and their families gather each summer to remember their community.

Roman Portable Sundials Excerpt :

In an unscientific era when maps were rarities, how did ancient Romans envisage their far flung empire? This was done by various means for certain, including with the aid of an ingenious type of portable sundial that has barely attracted notice. As the Romans understood before the first century BCE, to track the passage of the sun across the sky hour-by-hour one needed to know one's latitude and the time of year, and that, furthermore, sundials did not have to be fixed objects. These portable instruments, crafted in bronze, were adjustable for the changes of latitude to be expected on long journeys--say, for instance, from Britain to Spain, or from Alexandria to Rome, or even on a Mediterranean tour. For convenient reference, these sundials incorporated lists of twenty to thirty names of cities or regions, each with its specific latitude. One of the insights of Roman Portable Sundials is that the choice of locations offers unique clues to the mental world-map and self-identity of individuals able to visualize Rome's vast empire latitudinally. The sixteen such sundials known to date share common features but designers also vied to create enhancements. Comparison with modern calculations shows that often the latitudes listed are incorrect, in which case the sundial may not perform at its best. But then the nature of Romans' time-consciousness (or lack of it) must be taken into consideration. Richard Talbert suspects that owners might prize these sundials not so much for practical use but rather as prestige objects attesting to scientific awareness as well as imperial mastery of time and space. In retrospect, they may be seen as Roman precursors to comparable Islamic and European instruments from the Middle Ages onwards, and even to today's luxury watches which display eye-catching proof of their purchasers' wealth, sophistication, and cosmopolitanism. Richly enhanced with detailed photographs, line drawings, maps, a gazetteer, and a table of latitudes and locations, R
