Brutal North Excerpt :

BRUTAL NORTH is the first photographic exploration of modernist and Brutalist architecture across the North of England. During the post-war years the North of England saw the building of some of the most aspirational, enlightened and successful modernist architecture in the world. For the first time, a single photographic book captures those buildings, in all their power and progressive ambition. Over the last few years acclaimed photographer Simon Phipps has travelled and sought out the publicly commissioned architecture of the post-war North. From Newcastle's Byker Wall Estate, voted the best neighbourhood in the UK, to the extraordinary Park Hill Estate in Sheffield, from Preston's sweeping bus station and Liverpool's Royal Insurance Building, these structures have seen off threats to their survival and are rightly celebrated for the imprint they leave upon the skyline and the cultural life of their cities. This inspiring invitation to explore northern modernism includes maps and detailed information about all the architecture photographed. ‘Captures the most aspirational and enlightened architecture of the north’s postwar years.’ Guardian Please note this is a fixed-format ebook with some colour pages and may not be well-suited for older e-readers.

The principles of creativity in stunningly simple words and pictures by the man behind the world's most successful advertising agency How did two wheels emancipate women? How can a pie save thousands of lives? How can a useless piece of fabric determine social status? How can you make night day? Simplicity looks easy. It's not. It's easier to complicate than simplify. This book presents deceptively simple examples of concepts that have changed the world—from the single piece of paper that became the American Declaration of Independence, giving birth to the most powerful nation in the history of the world, to the symbol and line that enable us to write music. Thought-provoking and incisive, Brutal Simplicity of Thought is the distillation, in words and pictures, of the Saatchi method of creativity. This book started life as a training manual for Saatchi advertising employees, and its approach has shaped the Saatchistory for forty years. Brutal Excerpt :

This year marks a hundred years of the greatest rivalry the rugby world has known, New Zealand against South Africa. These titans first met on a test field in 1921 and, coincidentally, in the hundredth year of their battle for supremacy, they will also play their 100th test. The intense, unmatched rivalry carries a storyline like no other: it's not just about the physical struggle on the hard grounds of South Africa or in the depths of a New Zealand winter, it's also about the clash of two cultures and how attitudes shaped the sporting history. New Zealanders and South Africans first met on makeshift football fields during the Boer War and there was immediate acknowledgement of a mutual respect for rugby prowess. This continued during the First World War and culminated in an army team touring South Africa, a tour that itself led to the first official tour of New Zealand in 1921. For their first two series, in 1921 and 1928, they could not be separated. Then South Africa gained dominance in 1937 and 1949, but New Zealand regained the ascendency in a memorable 1956 series that enveloped the whole country. And, so it's continued, often against a backdrop of the starkly different attitudes the two countries had to racial equality. The professional era provided a different playing field and different circumstances, but the rivalry has been no less intense, the competition no less demanding.

Brutal Beauty Excerpt :

Brutal Beauty: Aesthetics and Aspiration in Urban India follows a postcolonial city as it transforms into a bustling global metropolis after the liberalization of the Indian economy. Taking the once idyllic “garden city” of Bangalore in southern India as its point of departure, the book explores how artists across India and beyond foreground neoliberalism as a “structure of feeling” permeating aesthetics, selfhood, and everyday life. Jisha Menon conveys the affective life of the city through multiple aesthetic projects that express a range of urban feelings, including aspiration, panic, and obsolescence. As developers and policymakers remodel the city through tumultuous construction projects, urban beautification, privatization, and other templated features of “world‐class cities,” urban citizens are also changing—transformed by nostalgia, narcissism, shame, and the spaces where they dwell and work. Sketching out scenes of urban aspiration and its dark underbelly, Menon delineates the creative and destructive potential of India’s lurch into contemporary capitalism, uncovering the interconnectedness of local and global power structures as well as art’s capacity to absorb and critique liberalization’s discontents. She argues that neoliberalism isn’t just an economic, social, and political phenomenon; neoliberalism is also a profoundly aesthetic project.

A photographic exploration of the post-war modernist architecture of London. This collection of unique and evocative photography of Brutalist architecture by Simon Phipps casts the city in a new light. Arranged by inner London Borough, BRUTAL LONDON takes in famous examples such as the Trellick Tower, the Brunswick Centre and the Alexandra Road Estate, as well as lesser known housing and municipal spaces. It serves as an introduction to buildings the reader may see every day, an invitation to look differently, a challenge to look up afresh, or to seek out celebrated Brutalism across the capital. The book's portable size and maps for each borough make it useful and practical; while the design, by leading agency A Practice for Everyday Life, echoes the aesthetic of Brutalist architecture with rough textured edges and fonts inspired by the site maps of modernist estates. Brutal Minds Excerpt :

Award-winning professor Stanley K. Ridgley, Ph.D. is a staunch defender of Individualism and Enlightenment values in the university as the best defense against the seduction of authoritarians, charlatans, political poseurs, and noxious ideologues of every sort. In BRUTAL MINDS, Dr. Ridgley takes on the topics of radicalization, cancel culture, and suppression of free speech and rise of socialism on campuses in the US. In the tradition of the seminal and influential classic Closing of the American Mind, Ridgley's book is a call-to-action to halt the left-wing takeover of higher education, bringing this important topic to a new generation. Much of American academia constitutes a dark world. It is populated by subsidized paranoiacs, amateur psychotherapists, neo-Marxist totalitarians, "student affairs professionals" imbued with Stormtrooper mentality, and thought reformers who violate federal law against human subject experimentation as they assault young students in "workshops" destroying family ties to clear the way for new relationships grounded in racialist ideology. These are the university's "brutal minds." The American university is a sanctuary where brutal minds find purpose, protection, camaraderie, subsidy, anonymity, and power. All of this occurs behind an educational façade that masks their activities and ideology. BRUTAL MINDS strips away the façade of the modern American university to reveal the power inside the institution -- the largely anonymous authoritarians who constitute the coercive gears and cogs of the machine; they turn the crank on the ideological grinders that process young people into a prefab conception of the Good Citizen, a 21st century version of the Soviet-style "New Man," who is transformed with the proper application of "education" and coercion.
