This is a cross-disciplinary text book on web-based information management for students, faculty and practitioners (in business, industry and government). The Web has emerged as a universal space of information, occasioning proliferation of electronic publications. Though efforts have been made in developing tools and methods such as search engines, metadata, portals, subject directories and subject gateways aimed at enhancing the organization of and accessibility to information on the web, more remains to be done. The book addresses gaps in the existing web-based tools and methods for information management. Cross disciplinary e.g. information science, information systems, computer science, business and records management Addresses topical issues in web information management such as content management, e-records readiness, e-government, portals and intranets, open source software, emerging technologies-WiMax, Bluetooth, etc. Targets audience in tertiary education, government, business and industry

Semantic Web Information Management Book Description :

Databases have been designed to store large volumes of data and to provide efficient query interfaces. Semantic Web formats are geared towards capturing domain knowledge, interlinking annotations, and offering a high-level, machine-processable view of information. However, the gigantic amount of such useful information makes efficient management of it increasingly difficult, undermining the possibility of transforming it into useful knowledge. The research presented by De Virgilio, Giunchiglia and Tanca tries to bridge the two worlds in order to leverage the efficiency and scalability of database-oriented technologies to support an ontological high-level view of data and metadata. The contributions present and analyze techniques for semantic information management, by taking advantage of the synergies between the logical basis of the Semantic Web and the logical foundations of data management. The book’s leitmotif is to propose models and methods especially tailored to represent and manage data that is appropriately structured for easier machine processing on the Web. After two introductory chapters on data management and the Semantic Web in general, the remaining contributions are grouped into five parts on Semantic Web Data Storage, Reasoning in the Semantic Web, Semantic Web Data Querying, Semantic Web Applications, and Engineering Semantic Web Systems. The handbook-like presentation makes this volume an important reference on current work and a source of inspiration for future development, targeting academic and industrial researchers as well as graduate students in Semantic Web technologies or database design.

Developing Web Information Systems Book Description :

Developing Web Information Systems brings together traditional system development methods that have been taught for many years on information systems and computer science courses with web/e-commerce development. It is the first book to bring together IS development and the web applications in a thorough and systematic way. There is a running case study that illustrates web IS development from start to finish. The case is easy to understand (a theatre) and results in a working web application. Most, if not all, analysis and design texts fall short of making that step into software. The book draws heavily on practical experiences of web-based IS development resulting from commercial system development, so as well as appealing to students and academics, it will also interest practitioners. The coverage of data management and e-business strategy gives the book the broader scope essential for understanding IS development properly in an Internet context. First book to bring together IS development and web applications thoroughly and systematically Covers full development process from strategy, through analysis and design, to working software Interactive case study which can be accessed on author's website

This book contains a selection of the best papers from WEBIST 2008 (the Fourth International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies), held in Funchal, Madeira, in 2008, organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), and co-sponsored by the Wo- flow Management Coalition (WfMC). The purpose of the WEBIST series of conferences is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in the technological advances and business - plications of web-based information systems. The series focuses on four main topic areas, covering different aspects of web information systems, including internet te- nology; web interfaces and applications; society, e-business, and e-government; and e-learning. WEBIST 2008 received 238 paper submissions from more than 40 countries on all continents. A double-blind review process was enforced, with the help of more than 200 experts from the international Program Committee, each of them specialized in one of the main conference topic areas. After reviewing, 32 papers were selected to be published and presented as full papers and 64 additional papers, describing work-- progress, as short papers for oral presentation only. Furthermore, 58 papers were p- sented as posters. The full-paper acceptance ratio was 13%, and the total oral paper acceptance ratio was 40%. Therefore, we hope that you find the papers included in this book interesting, and we trust they may represent a helpful reference in the future for all those who need to address any of the research areas mentioned above.
